Nice addition to my collection.
This book brings together the PHP code and the WordPress framework in a clear manner. This is not a book for beginners. You should be familiar with the PHP programming language. Also, I was able to copy and paste the examples. I was able to dive right in and play around with the code. I did not receive any type of compensation for this review.

Very useful as a reference. Not so as a tutorial.
As a tutorial, the book is not well structured. But, surprisingly there are many individual topics that are explained very well in this book. I mean many. For example, the following topics are directly useful for my project:- Custom tables- Internationalization- Ajax for WordPress- BuddyPress plugin- Mobile apps- Application securityIn the beginning, I read this book as a tutorial for building a WordPress web application, but soon I abandoned it due to the difficulties of setting up the sample application. Then, I read an excellent book "WordPress Web Application Development" by Rakhitha N. Ratnayake as an advanced tutorial as it features a fully functional sample application. However, I often come back to this book (Messenlehner and Coleman's) because it usually gives a clear explanation in particular topics. For example, when Ratnayake's book showed Ajax in an example, I searched for more information in the Internet because Ratnayake didn't give me sufficiently introductory knowledge. Then, when I returned to this book (Messenlehner and Coleman's), I found the explanation was better than most of the information I had gotten from the Internet. Later, when I need more info about a particular topic, I always take a look at this book, and it usually gives a satisfactory explanation and discussion. So, this book is a nice complementary to Ratnayake's book for my WordPress application development project.

Wish I'd seen the other reviews before buying.
Well, I bought this before any other reviews were published. I am starting to regret that. How are we supposed to access schoolpress.me? I don't see anything helpful on their website for the book. They have a "plugins page" that I figured would include links to all the plugins they mention in the book. Makes sense, right? Nope, it only has their plugin. The site for the book doesn't have anything on it. I figured registering would open up some more content. I was wrong. Same crap. They don't even have links to the plugins page I mentioned above. You only find it by typing the url printed in the book. Their blog pimps their company and the book, no real info there. The plugins page pimps your plugin and leaves out everything else in the book. I can't get onto their example site schoolpress.me because it's in "private beta". The GitHub site has a "Future Home" for your schoolpress.me sourcecode. So basically that's useless. What makes this book worth anything if they never managed to get any of the stuff in it online?Did I just spend $28 on a doorstop?

Writing a book is never easy - the authors did extremely well with a topic that's clearly popular but largely misunderstood. Some reviews I've read gave me the impression they wanted a complete out of the box experience. Perish the thought - the web app end of WordPress is still cutting edge and nor for that faint of heart.Having said that - this book is extremely useful. It's well written. It's thorough.

It's important to read the preface. This book is not for those who are new to programming in PHP, MySQL, or Wordpress, or in general. This is for those who are trying to take their applications to the next level.Fast Shipping, in Like New Condition.

Very disorganized.
You would be hard pressed to find a more disorganized book than this one. Some material is incompletely covered and some is repeated multiple times. It reads as if the two authors did not bother to review each other's work and the editor was on vacation that week. Very disappointed that O'Reilly books have slipped so much in recent years. And speaking of O'Reilly, they informed me that they no longer honor the $4.99 ebook offer that is mentioned in back of the book. (Not that you'd want to take advantage of it in this case but it's the principle of the thing!)

Expert but a bit brief
Most of this book is a kind of documentation for the school-press plug in, which is built on wordpress and buddypress plug-in, so there is not too much detail on the plain 'vanilla' wordpress install. However in combination with information you can find online, for example the series 'Using WordPress for Web Application Development' on tutsplus.com there's enough in here to convince me that there's a future in web apps backed by wordpress.
