Box of 3/4" Thick Boards - All Walnut

Every piece is 12" long and 3/4" thick. When I opened the box, the top layer had pieces 2"-4" wide; about what I expected. But the deeper I dug, the wider and nicer pieces were reveled. Most were 4"-6" wide, two were 8" wide. Beautiful grain. This box is even better than the first one I bought a couple of years ago from this vendor.

For what I got I am really happy with this. I was going to chop these up to small bits to make fishbone patterns and I was quite happy with all but 20% of one piece. The rest is entirely useable and they are all really close in color match. Which means if I plan correctly I can make a gradient from light to dark on my project. Good stuff!

My box of walnut was of mixed quality. Quite a few pieces had large knots and some were cracked. Was able to work around the flaws in most cases, but there are some pieces that are unusable. Definitely better to go to your local hardwood store.

I ordered 3 boxes from Woodchucks. One was walnut, and it was excellent (5 stars). One was Exotic woods, it was only 2 species of wood , but it was all usable(4 because it was 4 times the price of the others). The third was Basswood which was kind of disappointing, there were multiple knots and blemishes.(3) Overall I went with a 4 rating because you can't give 3 1/2. As any of you who do intarsia know it's hard to find hardwoods locally, and the freight kills you. Being an Amazon Prime customer shipping was free, a real bonus

I was so excited after opening my box of 3/4” walnut pieces that I immediately went on Amazon to order a box of mixed thin boards and to write this review. My pieces were indeed thick, flat, and free of knots or warps. And the icing on top of it all was finding a beautiful live edge board at the very bottom of the box, as if the person packing it knew the girl opening the box would swoon over it. I hope I’m this lucky with my next box.

While I appreciate that these are offcuts, maybe 5 of the ~25 pieces in my shipment contained significant knots; more than is useful. I also assumed from the photos that these are S4S. That was my mistake, but others should know that you will get unfinished edges. I buy this type of wood for small projects because I don't have a jointer or planer. Very little of what I received will be useful.

I have been getting into woodworking and wanted to do a few projects with black walnut. No stores around here carry it and its very expensive to order. I thought I would take a chance on this box, the price was right and it sounded like what I needed. The box was stuffed full and the pieces are perfect for what I am making (cutting boards and coasters). I will buy again once I make my way through this box.

I was so disappointed in this shipment that I decided to wait a few days to calm down. It didn't help. I gave this 3 stars as a gift. (After trying to salvage some of this I gave it what it should be...2 stars). Not only has the price almost doubled but the quality has hit bottom. I received 16 boards total, which included small stuff. Maybe I should say I received 17 boards because one of the 6" boards was split diagonally from end to end. Very little there to use. Another 6" board had a knot hole, not a knot, In the middle of the board so you can use only the edges. Another has a split 2/3 of the way down the middle and a big gouge in it. One board has a 3" half circle hole in the bottom half, a 1" half circle hole in the upper half an a 4" gouge near the middle, That's five 6" boards that I will only be able to get 6 or 7 2" wide boards. The rest will be waste, which is what should have happened to most of this shipment.
