Appropriate, interesting and educational
Good story liked by both 6 and 8 year old grandchildren. Also provoked discussion about the real life people and animals.

Inspiring
My grandson really enjoyed reading about real hero’s. The book was just right for his age. It bridged the gap of interest and reading skill.

great story of courage and bravery
My 5 year old loves this book! He loves learning about military operations and loves dogs. He was very inspired by this story. This is a great book to teach kids about our military heroes roles. It gives young kids a glimpse of how much they sacrifice and put themselves in harm's way for our freedom. It was heart warming and showed dog's can be heroes too! This book is geared for level 2 self readers but I enjoyed reading this story to my child.

Must Read
Excellent children’s book that explains the role dogs and their trainers have in the safety of our country. True heroes! I read it to my 3rd and 4th grade classes and also gave it as a baby gift for their beginning library.

Delightful, age-appropriate, entertaining, and educational!
This well-written and beautifully illustrated short book tells the heartwarming story of Gabe, a bomb-sniffing labrador retriever who originally came from a Houston dog pound, and his soldier partner, Chuck. During their 13 months in Iraq, Gabe and Chuck found more explosives than any other dog team and saved hundreds of lives. In Iraq, Gabe also brought comfort to wounded soldiers in Army hospitals, and later, after coming home, retiring from the Army, and being adopted by Chuck, he spent time inspiring kids in schools. Finally, in recognition of his many accomplishments, Gabe was voted the American Humane Association Hero Dog of the Year. Young readers will love this book, and at the same time, they will learn how dogs help soldiers, people in hospitals, and children in schools.

Highly Recommend This Book!!
Absolutely love this book! Nonfiction story about a brave dog and his trainer. My son has me read it to him all the time and asks so many questions about Gabe. Such a cute story! Very glad we have this book and highly recommend it to parents or teachers with kindergarten aged kids interested in service animals!

Good for new Marines
Bought this for my friend who just graduated Marine Corps OCS. He loves it. He struggles sometimes with the big words but I guess that's why it says Level 2 on the cover. Overall, highly recommend.

This wonderful children's book sheds light on an often overlooked military asset–the working dogs that become partners to their handlers. Just one dog, like MWD Gabe, can mean the difference between life and death on the battlefield. As worthy as the MWD and CWD dogs are in-country, few go on to become a national American Humane Association Hero Dog as did Gabe. Written and illustrated for kids, this is Gabe's story and that of the dog's handler, SGT Chuck Shuck.
