Q: Do these leave a residue on the ice?

Just wanted to let you guys know that the flakes you are finding are not from the ice tray but from your water and they are totally harmless. "These flakes are caused by calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, both of which are found in hard water and appear as white flakes when the water is frozen or boiled. ... The white flakes that can sometimes be seen in ice cubes are harmless carbonates." https://www.leaf.tv/articles/how-to-get-rid-of-white-flakes-in-ice-cubes/ All the washing in the world wont get rid of them but they wont do anything to affect your drink. If they really drive you crazy using bottled water instead of tap or even filtered should do the trick.

Q: What is the easiest way to fill the sphere "cubes"? I can't seem to get them close to perfect, and always wind up with a mess.

I have a method, but it is why I am also looking for a new product. I fill up the base with water as the instructions state, then I put a DVD case over the top (to keep pressure on it as it tends to simply float up if you don't) and then place a old Harry Potter box on top of that DVD case to add weight. Throw that in the freezer, and 24 hours later I took the book and DVD case. It's a mess and a poor design. The top should lock down like their newer product does (B07GXB7BYB).

Q: Can you use these for jello?

if you're trying to make jello shots in the rounds, you might need to freeze them solid, then to get the jello out of the mold, dip it in hot water for a couple seconds. That's how my mom used to unmold Jello in the 1970s.

Q: Are these packaged in a way that would be suitable for gifting?

They come appropriately packaged for shipping but if it were me, I would want to wrap in pretty paper and put on a bow if it was a gift. It did not come with wrapping paper and a bow. Maybe amazon can wrap the item (for an additional charge) in gift paper. I know there is an option that says "is this a gift" but I have never used that option. check with Amazon. I do love the ice cube trays !
