Mason doesn’t think his client is a murderer. But is she?
Why is Rita Swaine carrying a caged parrot while she arrives to consult with Perry Mason? And how did the parrot come to have an injured foot? These questions intrigue Mason so much, he takes on a case he doesn’t want. But what starts out as a divorce case quickly becomes a murder case — and Mason has a challenge that requires all his tricks and brainpower. There’s so much evidence against the attractive young Rita, most lawyers would despair of success. The neighborhood of the crime is full of avid busybodies who don’t miss a thing. But a second murder gives Mason a fresh perspective. And his solution is a surprise.Throughout his investigation, Mason is under pressure from his lovely secretary Della Street to find the murderer fast. He’s promised her a trip around the world, and the ship sails very soon. The push-pull between them is amusing. This is a good example of Perry Mason mysteries published in the 1930s — maybe not the very best, but pretty good. The book came out in 1937.

It's also a time capsule of a very different time 3.5 /5 stars
The characters were familiar friends, but only from TV when I was a child. The mystery was impossible to follow, but fun to read; except the racial slur and the treatment of women as if a subhuman, "Shut up! " a regular staple of instructions from lawyer to clients. But according to this story, which may be what It was like-I wasn't born yet some social issues are not acceptable today.

Another Winner!
Readers can always expect great characters, fantastic plot twists, and a lawyer we all wish we could afford! That's Perry Mason and his creator, E. S. G., never fails to deliver. This case is no different. A first-rate success!

One of the best I've read
I enjoyed this book a lot. It is one of the older Perry Mason books and it is one of the best, The case has some interesting twists and the sub plot with Perry and Della is quite interesting as well. Being one of the older books, their relationship was still, how shall I say it? Fluid.....Some of the later book in the series seem like he phoned them in -with recycled plots and less color, but this is an example of one of the best.

Always a good read!
These books -- the original Perry Mason series -- are so much fun to read!! They may seem predictable now, but only because we know the genre so well, thanks to Erle Stanley Gardner, one of the forerunners of the Great American Whodunit. The books give a glimpse into the time they were written as well... cars still had push-button starters, phones were primarily in booths, 24-hour stores were a rarity, and women wore gloves!!

complicated story
probably the most complicated plot of the novels so far. a somewhat hurried resolution to the case, but a satisfying ending.

watch out fot the initials
The plot was fine as usual, watch out for the initials on the luggage. Same complaint about horrible typos and pagination. What gives? It seems as though it was converted to e-books by a non-English speaker who uses British spellings and there were almost no contractions so the dialogue was utterly stilted. I don't know if this is the way ESG wrote it but is extremely annoying.

Devious delight
The early Perry Masons are generally the best and this one stands out as a gem among them. The story is much more believable than usual and goes at a good high pace with a very satisfying conclusion. A very good read indeed, a delight.

Really cerebral mystery
Fabulous mystery--kept me hooked till the end. Love the direction in which Perry and Della's relationship is going. Wish all the books in the series were in Kindle Unlimited, but only a few are.

Delightful Reading all through
Truly enjoyed reading this mystery. It didn't get too complicated like some of Gardner's other Perry Mason's stories. Loved the ending with Della turning down Mason's proposal giving the most convincing reason. They are best as boss and secretary, the secretary matching her boss's wits.

the condition of the book
The book obviously had some water damage, it was soiled throuhg most of the pages and also had a strong mustly smell
