Where craft project meets mealtime
This product is a lot of fun. I'm rather new to the onigiri/musubi craze and I must say I'm loving it. I can say with great certainty that you must must must start with really good sushi grade rice. It's all about the rice! Once you have hot rice ready to work into any of many fun shapes, you want to work quickly, and this mold lets you do just that with precision and consistency without burning your hands. You do want to spritz or sprinkle a bit of salted water on the mold and your hands to keep the rice from sticking to everything. The mold that comes with these nori sheets is the perfect shape and size (I'm guessing about half a cup, though I haven't measured it) to exactly fill the nori. It is genius. There is a bit of a learning curve as to exactly how full to fill the mold, and precisely where to place the little rice triangle. There is a little indent for the filling and you can easily enlarge that with a dampened finger. Properly done the wrap fits exactly and the sticker straddles all three corners holding the whole thing together until you are ready to consume it. You just zip the cellophane strip and gently tug away the wrap, the nori stays stuck to the rice, nice and crisp. I like to take a couple of grains of rice from the musubi and use it to adhere/glue the nori to itself making it a little more secure, tidier. I also feel like a little time spent futzing with the nori gives it a chance to soften up a little. Depending on the filling you choose onigiri/musubi can be so satisfying, and almost always well received. We are pretty stuck on the omeboshi plums around here. We are fortunate enough to have an Oriental market in the neighborhood. I leave the pits in and just warn everyone to be mindful, half the joy is sucking on the pit! We also like just stirring in some toasted sesame seeds and minced scallions into the rice instead of or in addition to fillings. Also like to sprinkle a little furikake or sumac or lately Tajin between the rice and nori. There is just no wrong answer. These are awesome and a lot of fun, but, a little costly at a buck a sheet/wrap. My eighty year old mother-in-law can power through three onigiri without batting an eye. I went through the entire 10 pack and we only traveled from the kitchen to the sofa. Though great TV snacks, I believe I will save these wraps for picnics and other occasions where we actually leave the house. Prior to finding this product I used a Saran Wrap lined teacup as my mold, leaving the plastic wrap in place to form the rice disc and keep it fresh until ready to eat. I just brought the nori on the side in a zip bag to be combined at the time of consumption. Just as tasty...less wow factor. Be sure and check Pinterest for lots of great ideas for musubi/onigiri.

This set is adorable. The rice baller is great
This set is adorable. The rice baller is great. It's well made and is easy to use. It's also well thought out so that you aren't trying to force the rice ball out of the mold. The instructions are all in Japanese, but I think that made it seem kind of authentic. The rice baller itself is so easy to use you can follow the pictures and get an idea on how to use it.The seaweed package is wonderful. It even comes with little plastic wrappers so you can take your rice balls to go.I received this item at a discount to provide an unbiased, honest review.

Only time I can play with my food!
My parents always told me and my siblings never to play with food and we always listened!... but now I have an excuse! Having this onigiri maker has been making eating rice actually fun! That's something I would never hear anyone say, especially in Asian households. This is great for any type of rice that you don't make too mushy (too much water and will stick to your hands and the mold) like jasmine, sushi and Laos "sticky" rice (it's not sticky to your fingers but they do stick to each other). I'm excited to make some rice snacks for my nephews! Rice a staple in our household so I can put anything inside (that won't be messy) that we normally eat with rice. It's easy to use and it works great! I've received this product at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest review.
