A Meditative Walk on Water
McFarlane's Silt is a lyrical essay on the Broomway, the public pathway across the Somerset levels. To read it is to walk at his side along this mystical path; to be at once fascinated by the experience of walking on water, and terrified by the danger of being overtaken by the incoming tide. A book for the mindful walker, a walking meditation. David Quentin's photographs are disappointing when viewed on Kindle, and this reviewer felt his Afterword, written in a more academic style, while interesting on points of law, added very little to the enjoyment of Silt. Perhaps it should be published separately.

This is an excellent taste of what MacFarlane's longer books are like
This is an excellent taste of what MacFarlane's longer books are like. Wonderful prose, and a desire to explain the wonder, and in this case the danger of the natural world.

Sea Road to a day's Adventure!
Sea Road to a day's adventure is a very interesting and beautifully written short book. I wish it could have been longer but it took me to a most unusual location that few would believe existed - a road at sea! The title attracted me because I am a geologist. Well done geographer Robert MacFarlane for getting the nitty gritty of an ancient routeway between your toes!

Evocative & thought-provoking
Robert Macfarlane's writing about walking, paths and boundaries transcends the merely descriptive and takes the reader into realms of thought and imagination about who we are, where we come from, who was here before us, and who will come after. The Broomway is well out of the ordinary as a path. It does and doesn't exist. And when it does exist, it is confusing, it defeats the usual innate navigational abilities, and can easily lead the walker astray. Macfarlane's account and David Quentin's photos complement each other beautifully.

Short but wonderful!
As ever Robert MacFarlane writes beautifully and interestingly, and as always evokes in me a strong feeling of envy, both of his literary ability (which is totally without the accompaniment of elitism and poshness), but also that he can do these wonderful things. Short but wonderful!

Beautiful writing
I loved Robert macfarlane's writing and wanted to visit the broomway myself. I was less interested in the second part which is written by another person.I have now bought The Old Ways so I can read more.

Atmospheric.
I chose this book because I love the smudging of reality between the sea and the land which is so beautifully described. I'll read it again and again .
