Good investment, DIY only if you know electrical or are a careful, thorough learner!
Just installed, so I am relying on its reputation/sales/longevity on the market. The unit is solid, compact, and the 10 g tinned copper wires are impressive. Installation- for simple installations by a pro I would look for $150-$200 MAX. My DIY took over an hour, but I am slow and careful. Do your homework FIRST! Note- double tapping (2 wires under 1 screw) is dangerous and not "Code" unless the fitting is approved for that (never seen that yet!). Use the pigtail method on all 3 connections. Also, screw tightness is now a Code issue and specs are on newer disconnect boxes. Up your DIY "game" and consider getting a torque screwdriver. If your original set-up has white wires being used as "Hot" wires, consider using black tape or heat shrink to properly mark them. (See before and after pix-hot wires are in center. White is reserved for neutral, not hot.) WAGOs are great, but be sure to use the larger 20g-10g ones, as the AG3000 has 10 g wire. I used tape to avoid lever movement with some white adhesive tape on the ground wago. The box gets pretty tight, but it CAN be done properly, in a standard disconnect box. Document (and save) everything as soon as you are done, who knows what you might need to make a claim.

New unit. New standards. Easy install.
This item arrived when expected and was new in the box. Intermatic has a long history of producing surge protection devices (SPD). This device is made of two 150V clamping devices in a single NEMA 4x box. It's designed to be connected to two hot legs (standard residential split phase) and ground. It is not designed to provide neutral line protection as most residential condenser units don't have a neutral anyway. This is not an EMF or noise filter, just a spike/surge protector. One reason I got this unit is because it is listed with the new standards (3rd edition) and it is listed as a type 1 and type 2 device. It also has 10 Ga. wire rather than the little 14 Ga. wire that others use. The specs are not the highest, but it's hard to directly compare 3rd edition standards with earlier SPD/TVSS ratings. Other comparable devices are the Supco SCM150 and the ICM516 units. My HVAC condenser is not a computerized heat pump but it still has advanced controllers that cost hundreds to replace if they blow up. So it's worth doing something simple to try and help reduce any surges/spikes from damaging my condenser. Intermatic also includes a 3-year $7500 connected equipment warranty (which may be as hard to prove and collect on as others). It was easy to install at the condenser disconnect (it installs in any position in a standard knock out, I picked left side). It comes with a rubber gasket for the lock nut to prevent water from getting in. It has a simple single green LED that tells you there is power and it's "working". It's hard to truly test these units as I'm not in an area that takes a lot of hits. If this unit blows up (or fails in some way) and my HVAC system is still running then I'll say it works and get a replacement, but until there is a problem I'll have to assume it's doing the job...UPDATE: Just short of 2 years the green light went out. This means the unit has failed in some way and is no longer offering full protection. I went to Intermatic's web site, filled out some forms, got an email, FAXed them the information and amazon receipt without talking to a person. I had a new unit for free in about a week. No equipment damage noted.

Easy to install
So far so good we’ve only had one bad storm so far and my AC did not shut off. Let’s hope I don’t have a power surge, but my green light is still flashing.
