Digital Thermometer - 8" Probe Instant Read, Fast and Accurate Meat, Candy, Brewing and Milk Thermometer

I'm a big tea drinker, but have always had some trouble bringing the water to the right temperature. Black teas are easy; you just bring it to the boiling point. Oolong, green, and white teas, however, need hot water below the boiling point. I've used typical meat thermometers, but it doesn't work because they have such short probes. You have to use tongs to stick the thermometer into the kettle (electric or otherwise), or you get your hands burnt by the steam.I thought about getting an electric kettle with a thermometer built in, but it's so darn expensive that I couldn't justify the cost. So, I looked into getting a thermometer with a long probe, which is much cheaper. This one is perfect. It's a little longer than it has to be to fit into the kettle, but that's fine. I fill the kettle and stick in the thermometer, then wait till the water is steaming and turn the thermometer on. The temperature displays immediately, and I turn off the kettle when the target temperature is reached (in the case of white tea, 185 F). Sometimes I forget to turn the thermometer off, but that's fine because it automatically shuts off so the battery power isn't wasted.On the whole, I'm satisfied with the thermometer, at least for my limited purposes.

As far as functionality, this works just as described. It's accurate and has a nice sleek design. The only down side is I purchased the triangle arm that was listed as "typically purchased together" but the hole in the arm was too small for the rod on the thermometer to fit in so I'm not sure why these two items are purchased together if you can't actually use them together. That was my only complaint. Shipping was ok, we live in Alaska so shipping is usually a bit longer.

This thermometer worked great, until it completely broke. I turned it on and everything on the screen is flashing, none of the buttons work, and I definitely can't get a reading. We have not left it in the oven, so it definitely didn't exceed 572 degrees, we hand-washed only the metal probe to make sure that it didn't get water in the electronics, and we stored it in the provided case. We only got 6 weeks of use (2 weeks beyond the return period, of course). Very frustrated because I thought we had found a winner!

I have not got to use this Thermometer yet so I don't know the accuracy of it. However, the photo is deceptive. When I purchased the thermometer, it appeared on the photo that the face was at one and a half inches in diameter and that the digital display was at least one and a1/4 inch's in length. When I received the thermometer, I was disappointed at the diameter of the head and digital display. The entire face is 1 1/8 of an inch in diameter and the digital display is just 13/16 by 5/16 inches. You can place a nickel over the digital display and cover the readings. If you have great eye site or glasses, then this may not be a factor to you.

The battery died pretty quickly and I can't figure out what the replacement is. It honestly doesn't even seem like the battery is replaceable at all. I'll definitely be getting rid of this one and upgrading soon.

I'm just learning to make candles and I got a couple thermometers to try. Well I must say this one is great because is long and the readings are accurate. It turns itself off after a while which is ok, i just have to push the button again. I love it!!I have to confess that one time I forgot to take the sleeve off and it burned/shrunk, but the thermometer is still working great.I do love and recommend it. Thanks!!

Works very nicely. My only quibble is that it needs a metal clip, or something, that would allow me to use it in a deep fryer without having to stand there and physically hold it. If it had such a clip it would be perfect. (I'd even be willing to pay a couple bucks more for a clip)Otherwise, it works great, and am happy with it.

Update from my previous rating: While I overlooked that fact that it kept coming apart as I would use it, it did provide a temp reading. I would snap it back together. But, finally, it just came apart and the internal wire came undone. This rendered it useless. Into the trash it went.
