A uniquely delicious, small grained, high elevation grown red rice
Lotus Foods Rice, Bhutanese Red, 15-Ounce (Pack of 6) My 21 year old son declared this tiny, hearty rice "the best rice" he's ever had, the first time I cooked a cup of it. One cup of raw rice makes 3 cups of this delectable little red rice cooked. It's a concentrated food. I tend to doctor rice with onion, peppers (hot or bell), butter and spices. But even with all that added it is plain that this flavorful red rice is special. Some larger grain red rices turn out rather chewy. But, this sweet and nutty Bhutanese Red Rice is tender without being mushy. Every grain is distinct when you follow the cooking instructions closely. Even with my adding extra liquid, in the form of a half stick of good butter, onions, peppers and a little salsa, the rice wasn't mushy. I am careful to remove from the heat at exactly 20 minutes and let sit, absorb and set, without removing the lid for exactly 10 minutes. Also, you want to start the rice at a low boil before reducing heat to simmer for 20 minutes. I think that this rice, very conveniently, cooks in only 20 minutes because it's grains are so small. I feel good about buying Bhutanese Red Rice because it's grown at high elevation on the Tibetan plateau watered by a glacial river from the Himalayas. This makes it mineral rich (the movement of glaciers over time grinds up mineral laden rocks and deposits silt downstream creating rich soil for agriculture), and, also, culturally special due to it's heirloom standing. Bhutanese Red Rice is a rice developed and grown for generations under unique geophysical conditions. I like the idea that I'm contributing to biodiversity in buying such a rice! Buying this Bhutanese Red Rice also helps out native farmers. Serendipitously, I watched a "Nature" special on OPB about the Himalayas and the lands in the shadow of the Himalayas. Featured were farmers of the Tibetan Plateau who grew rice on sculpted mountainside terraces (beautiful to see!)at 8,000 ft. I am sure that this little rice is the exact same as shown on that program because it's description on the package coincides exactly. I will be buying Lotus Foods Bhutanese Red Rice for my family and friends from now on. Buying a Pack of 6 is nice because you can give a couple packages to friends you want to convert and still have enough for yourself until you order more:). The Whole Foods store in my area of Vancouver, Washington does carry Lotus Foods Bhutanese Red Rice and has it on sale often too.

Aromatic
This is a beautiful aromatic rice that the flavor carries through once cooked. The great thing is that there isn't a need for heavy seasoning. Using a broth like non-chicken chicken broth (vegan friendly) or a standard low sodium chicken broth with a teaspoon of good flavored olive oil (I love the greek olive oil as It has a natural buttery flavor to me. But find a flavored oil that. you enjoy the taste of) add 1 teaspoon to the broth. This makes for a wonderful basic rice. If you want to season the rice further add some freshly ground black pepper, or some roasted garlic - these are great additions. Quick little health tip: For my diabetic friends, cook your rice. allow it to cool completely then store it in the fridge overnight. This allows for the breakdown of the starch to becomes a resistant starch and reduces the impact the rice will have on the glycemic index. This rice is a great foundation for any recipe.

This Fragrant Jasmine Rice is so delishhh!
This is my one of my favorite brands for Jasmine Rice! Right away I could smell & taste the difference in quality. So fragrant & unique in texture. I’m not a big rice lover - but I’ve been finishing every grain on the plate. From now on, I will only buy this brand from WF. However, I wish they sold in bigger bags. Pricey for the small amount.

Wow, so good!
This is a very high quality jasmine rice and the best I’ve ever had. I just wish it came in a 5 or 10 pound bag. I also don’t like that it’s so expensive.

Delicious and nutritious
Cooked perfectly after following the directions on the package (however I sautee it in olive oil with salt before adding water). I sort through it and wash it thoroughly beforehand. It's really a delicious variety. My kids liked it too even though they are used to eating jasmine rice pilaf. Best part is it didn't give me reflux problems like when I eat white rice. Will definitely be cooking this again.
