Best of: STEELEYE SPAN

A good compilation, with one glaring "clanger" in the mix - why their cover version of "To Know Him Is To Love Him" (track 10) is considered one of their "best" is beyond me - if it had been recorded in a more uniquely Steeleye Span style then fair enough, but this is a very bland, boring and unimaginitive version that adds nothing to this collection. That being said, I would recommend this "Best of..." album if you are looking for a general Steeleye Span compilation to add to your collection, or as a starting point for exploring some of their individual albums. Just be prepared to hit the "skip" button every time you get to track 10.

The Best of Steeleye Span lives up to its title. Many of the songs they record appear on other albums, but they always seem to choose songs that are among my favorites. While their voices meld into one unforgettable sound, their instrumentals can stand on their own. Maddy Prior, their lead vocalist has a haunting quality. Even old songs such as "To Know Him is to Love Him", a song from my earlier years, sounds as new as it did when I first heard it. This CD contains something for everyone. If you already like Steeleye Span, you'll love this, all eighteen songs.

Got into this trying to collect Steeleye Span. There are several "Best of.." or "Spanning the Years" albums and they both contain similar material. Look at them carefully and don't get both. Still some good material. Regards,

It's all their best stuff in one place. What's not to like. And since all I have are vinyl disks that I can no longer play, this works for me. If you are NOT a fan, this would be a good place to start. But you probably wouldn't give it 5 stars.

Bought this CD because the "Commoner's Crown" CD was WAY out of my price range! Sorry $60.00 + is a bit rich. I like Steeleye Span, but,I have to tell my better half how much the CD's cost..., eventually.

Love the combination of rock and English folk music. Amazing voice on Maddie. Just wish I could live in this world, a strange mix of nostalgia and longing for a state of being that never actually existed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Ther were no bands (nor have there ever been) like Steeleye Span. They are a wonderful band that never disappoints.

I had this before as a 2 album set. I enjoyed being able to listen to it again!
