Nice book, I started with copying Java John and enjoyed it- It was my first little person an he is smiling like in the book (-;If you like a guidance to carve small figures- here it is with all help you need! Good beginners guide.I didn't paint the carving except small black pencil dots in the eyes.The book shows a lot of examples to get a feeling, how details (small/ long nose, simple eyes, caricature proportions,...) will result in special characteristics- very helpful!The book starts with an introduction into flat plane carving with its historic background- interesting for this typical type of carving art.I did not found a similar book in Germany and was happy to get it from 'overseas'.Summary:Take the book, a piece of wood, a sharp knife (and gloves), ... and make funny caricatures!

I like this book. Using 10/4 blanks the author has multiple photos with explanations to guide you through carving the first 4 characters in the book. Some info and suggestions are giving on painting. The thing is, suggestions are given for drawing guidelines and what to rough out in which order but the author does not give detailed point by point on refining the carving. There are dozens of drawings of suggested figures that are drawn on grids. These are great but you are expected to bring your own skills aquired on the first four figures. Good book, perhaps steep learning curve for complete novice.

Just an ok book. Just several patterns in detail. The rest are just basic outlines of figures. There's better books out there for instruction.

Excellent patterns

This book comes with tons of patterns which is cool. I would get this book in addition to the 2o min whittling projects book. So far it has been great to learn from.

Good book for those who have more experience than my beginner status. BUT, I got this so I could learn more techniques and I'm quite sure I'll cherish this as my skill improves. Try to get it used unless it's for a gift. I do that whenever offered on Amazon. They are usually a good price and very, very usable, just not new.

Good book

This book has three detailed characters. One man and two women. The rest of the “patterns” are half hearted efforts with no photos. Very disappointing. If you buy “Whittling Little Folk” you wont be disappointed. This book added nothing to my knowledge and the three detailed characters were not remarkable. I was expecting a plethora of characters especially since the title says “50 patterns.” However the pattern drawings are very simplistic. Save your money.
