Almost the perfect case for the Note 3
So, I foolishly didn't have a case on my Note 3 for the longest time, because I guess I didn't think that any case would work (the phone is already SO darn big, which you know if you own one or are considering owning one). I kept the phone in my back pocket or wherever I thought the screen wouldn't get scratched. Thankfully, before purchasing a case, the screen didn't get scratched, but my under-one-year-old son thought it would be a good idea to smash one of our household tablets to pieces (!). We thanked him for picking our least favorite tablet, and considered it a wake-up call to baby-proof ALL of our electronics, including this massive Note 3.Enter the OtterBox Commuter Series. I used to be an OtterBox Defender guy, back when I had an iPhone, but I just couldn't justify that larger size with the already huge Note 3 (how would I even be able to fit it into my pocket?). Plus, the reviews of the Commuter were pretty great, so I bit the bullet. Once the Commuter arrived, I was a bit disappointed that the instructions were a bit like Ikea furniture instructions (seriously--it took me a while to figure it out, but I'm also not that savvy with putting things together). But 10 minutes later, the case was on.9/10 for looks and functionality of the case. The case does not add much bulk at all to the Note 3 but it seems really sturdy. The Commuter really seems to strike the balance of size and protection. I also love that the rim of the case sits up about 1/3 centimeter from the top of the screen, so that I can put the phone face down and not worry about scratching the screen. My only complaint, and it's minor, is that the back of the phone is quite slippery. I wish there were a little more rubber on the back so that it would stay put on slippery surfaces (plane tray tables, car middle consoles). But, 3/10 for the screen protector that's included with this case. Although it hasn't interfered with the functionality of the touch screen, it's quite flimsy, and mine has pockets of bubbles in it and bumps from my application of it. Perhaps somebody else with a surgeon's steady hands could get it right the first time, but I couldn't. They do include what looks like a small credit card in the package to smooth out the kinks, but not only did this not get rid of the bubbles, but it left little streaks on the screen protector. Now when I look at my phone, you can't see any of the marks unless the screen is white, gray, or black (or off), but it looks pretty pock-marked and bad, so off shopping for a nicer screen protector I go. So, this is something to keep in mind if you order this case. I'm usually not picky about things like this, but the bubbles and marks on the screen really don't look so great on an otherwise great looking phone (plus, again, it's bumpy in parts when I scroll through pages).Despite the screen protector issue, I'd recommend this case in a heartbeat--as I said above, it's a great mix of size and protection for the Note 3. Just be forewarned about the flimsy screen protector that comes included in the box.

Actually, good as you get.
Otterbox or Trident? When I've used a protective case before, Trident has always been my first choice. In fact, I've never used anything other than the Trident Aegis. Trident offers 1,2 and 3 layer cases. And so does Otterbox. Both companies offer plastic screen protectors of similar, but not great quality included with various cases. On the high end, Trident is less expensive. Both top level cases, the Trident Kraken and Otterbox Defender have different yet equally innovative options worth checking out. After looking at a few others, it remained a choice between Otterbox and Trident.Specifically, the choice was between the middle range Trident Aegis and the Otterbox Commuter both for the Note 3. And both are extremely similar by design. Trident has a lot of specs about it's shock and drop ratings and 'military' standards. The Commuter and Aegis have similar dust protection and on the same openings. Overall, there are more similarities than differences. For me, the questions were about protection, bulk and weight, looks and the ability to use a glass screen protector. Overall, I prefer the way the Commuter looks when compared with the Aegis. It's got a nice rectangular look around the screen that defines and agrees with the phone's look, and not the case. The Aegis has small bumpers rounding the corners somewhat but they may actually serve to protect it better. The Commuter is a little lighter and slimmer, not much at 2.24 oz (Aegis is 3.04 oz). The Commuter fits very nicely together with a glass screen protector, in my case, the MIME Ghost which is a little thicker than some. I'm sure the Trident Aegis also plays well with most glass protectors. Regarding height, the Commuter is 0.1 inch longer and both are about the same depth. The Commuter is about 0.23 inch wider, less than 1/8 inch on each side. As for protection, from past experience, I will say that the Trident Aegis may have a small lead because of the better corner protection and how the inner layer is made. So, while new to Otterbox, I was not surprised by how much I like the Commuter on the Note 3 because of reputation and great reviews. Overall, while slightly wider, it actually looks slimmer. If the Trident offered significantly better protection as the company suggests, it would have remained my choice, hands down. But despite the honest hype from both companies, the Aegis doesn't seem to be that much more protective. While there are other cases just as good, I am sticking to what I know first hand from past user experience with Trident and a successful first experience with Otterbox. Check out both, you won't go wrong. For the Note 3 specifically, with regard to comfort, feel and looks, the Commuter edged into first place for me.

solid but slippery
changed my old defender from otter whitch is rubber outside with good grip because belt case broke after 1 month, but they sent me a new one, but was too bulky so to try the Commuter, this is thiner but it is PLASTIC OUTSIDE and rubber inside and it's slippery in my hand, it comes with screen protector that sticks on the phone screen witch is good, but it did not mention on description, so I bought separate screen for $18 extra that I don't use.poor product description!!!The case will protect your phone like crazy, mine felt from the house twice with no scratch.

Protection, Comfort and Usability
Seriously,This is by far my favorite Otterbox case now, the communter for the S3 had some issues which seem to have been totally addressed, or approached differently forthe Note 3.There is no hard shell framing of the buttons, making them way easier to press. Which was a bit of a letdown for the S3 case. The rubber lip is high and wide, yet has minimal intrusion on the surface area.Slight conerns with the lesser amount of the backplate clamping the soft rubber, but it really feel snug and fit. So it's more of an impression, than an actual concern. In the end, if you own an Note 3, get this now. Don't wait for you to drop it and end up with a mess on your hands. The cost is totally worth it.
