Needed this after years of using a hand pump.
Decided it was time to "automate" the ol' oil changing process in my boat engines. Picked this up, even though I thought it was a bit pricey (WAY cheaper than the ones put out by the oil changer companies). Hooked everything up, threw the switch, and in about 3 minutes, engine was empty. Keep in mind, this comes with a 3 (maybe 3.5) gallon bucket, hardly enough to empty two GM big block marine engines. No problem, swap it with a 5 gallon bucket and you're ready to go. Once you swap buckets, you MUST drill thru the existing holes, and redo the zip ties. These hold the bucket bail upright. This unit is top heavy, and "tilt" heavy, as the pump isn't centered on the lid. Not a big deal though, pay attention to what you're doing and you won't have any issues. Last, and if you want to invest a few bucks, go get a bucket lid and a new bucket, take the pump lid off the bucket full of oil, and slap the new lid on it. Drop it off at your local auto store that takes oil, and you're done. Just remember to re-zip tie the new bucket to the pump lid. Yeah, a little extra work, but worth not having to dump the oil (the pump lid does have a spout) into another container, etc.

Great product, but does not ship well
I was shipped two separate units from Amazon. Both the original and replacement order arrived broken without any obvious external signs of damage to the packing box etc.... It is possible the units arrived at Amazon broken. The mounting plate where the pump attaches to arrived broken. Amazon was great about taking the items back. They stopped selling/shipping the units until they figures out/along with the manufacturer what was going on. I needed to use the unit so I purchased from West Marine. They matched Amazon's price, and I could see the unit in person to make sure it was not broken. Amazon even gave me a $3.99 credit for an overnight shipping. I am very happy with how Amazon handled the shipping and issue. I have and will continue purchasing most things if possible from Amazon. The unit itself works amazingly well on our Mercruiser powered boat. I used a stainless steel hose clamp as someone suggested in one of the reviews instead of the plastic clamp (seemed prudent). For years I have been using one of the small drill attached pump, I wish I had purchased this years ago. Worked awesome and even to pump the oil out of the container into the gallon oil container the new oil came in! Awesome, easy, worth the money, clean!

Improvements Jabsco should make to the 17800-2000 Marine Porta Quick Oil Changer
This is a review of the Jabsco 17800-2000 Marine Porta Quick Oil Changer. I have some comments, and thoughts how Jabsco can improve this kit.In 1992, I built an oil change kit with a pump on top of a 5 gallon bucket using a Teel brand pump. I needed the five gallon bucket which provides 20 quarts of capacity, enough for a pair of Mercruiser 496HO's or Dart 509's, which hold 9 quarts each. The Teel brand pump performed flawlessly for some 27 years, but failed me this spring. So I ordered the Jabsco kit as a replacement. The Jabsco kit comes with a 3 1/2 gallon bucket. Satisfactory for many if not most, but not enough for the 18 quarts I need for my engines. Fortunately, the Jabsco bucket lid fits a 5 gallon bucket. The kit comes with plastic hose clips for hose and fittings. These type of hose clips are risky for such an operation. No one wants a hose full of motor oil to blow out in the bilge, on the dock or on in the driveway. I always use stainless steel hose clamps for hoses and fittings, and this is what I did when I assembled the kit out of the box. My first suggestion is for Jabsco to include stainless steel hose clamps at no extra charge. The kit includes a 1/4" teflon dipstick tube, but it is too short to reach the oil in many big block engines, much less the bottom of the oil pan. So my second suggestion for Jabsco is to include a longer hose to reach the bottom of the Mercruiser 496HO's, and let the customer "cut to size" for their own application. The Jabsco pump is larger and heavier than my old Teel. The Jabsco looks to be made of brass construction. When running the pump is rather loud, but that is normal. It makes perfectly good sense the bucket will want to flip over upside down when it's not holding motor oil. So if the bucket is empty or only has a few quarts of oil, the bucket has a propensity to flip over, upside down, when you pick it up by the handle. I would like to see Jabsco engineer a simple clip or lever system to take place of the zip ties which force the handle to remain in the up position. My 3rd suggestion for Jabsco is, give me a way to store the bucket with the handle down, and something I can do to lock into the upright position while I carry it when empty. Oil anywhere other than in the engine or in the bucket is not a good thing, so come up with a solution to lock/unlock the handle in the upright position. Some of the newer boat engines come with drain hoses attached to the oil pan drain, and accessible either through the transom drain plug, or pulled forward in front of the engine. Fourth suggestion, I'd love to see Jabsco provide a brass fitting for the neoprene hose I can attach to the 496HO drain hose fittings, even if it's an option I could buy at a reasonable cost.

Money well spent!! Will recommend to all my boating friends
My husband bought this so we could change the oil in our boat motors and generator ourselves instead of paying someone else to do it. If you own a boat then you know nothing is cheap! It was easy to assemble and operate. It took maybe 15 minutes to suck the oil out of both motors and 5 minutes on the generator. Oil changing is made easier now!! The bucket that it’s attached to was small but we just brought an empty 5 gallon bucket with us to put the used oils in. It even has a reverse suction so we could put the hose in the other bucket, flip the switch the other way and it emptied the used oil it just sucked out of the boat into the other container. No mess!!! This is a definite buy if you change your own oil!!!
