Good Set for a Great Action Hero
After the embarrassing manufacturing error of his previous movie collection , it's nice to see Dolph Lundgren properly add his name to the pack of vintage action heroes getting these multi-film compilations for newer fans to acquaint themselves with. There is not yet much choice when it comes to collections for the Swedish Superman, but "Dolph Lundgren Triple Threat" is a nice little assemblage. Hidden Assassin is an international thriller and my least favorite of the bunch. The production values are good and co-lead Maruschka Detmers ( The Mambo Kings ) plays well enough off of Dolph, but there's not a lot of satisfying action. The scene where Dolph, hanging from the ledge of a building, gets sniped at is interesting, but there is a disappointing shortage of fistfights. If you like spy movies, this could be for you, but it's not the reason I'm a Lundgren fan. Blackjack was director John Woo's fifth American movie, and by most mainstream accounts it's not all that special, but for Dolph, this is pretty spectacular. The stylized gunplay is in full effect, and there's a neato motorcycle scene the likes of which had certainly never been seen in Lundgren's pictures before. The plot, characters, and circumstances are as quirky as can be, though it comes at the expense of a lot of the acting. While not his best, the film proves that Woo can deliver thrills even when limited to a TV budget. Men of War most successfully imitates the big-budget feel of mainstream movies, and it's just preachy enough to fool you (not that that's a bad thing). An island setting plus a swell collection hardworking costars let this one get away as an adventure-drama, not really becoming a full-blown action flick until its final fifth, but oh man does it become an action flick then. For viewers used to mainstream action from the mid-90s, this one will mostly be your favorite among the three.
