Historical romance for the bratty submissives
I enjoyed the story line. This is a kinky romance, as listed. There are many varieties of kink. This story has to do with a bratty, spoiled girl of marriageable age who spurned good suitors. Her parents knew of a well to do man willing to deal with her, if she learned to obey and submit to his desires. She got way more than she ever dreamed of. Part nightmare at first, as she learned horrible things in a kinky disciplinary school. This is an excellent romance novel for bratty submissives, or dominants, who like the give and take as a potential master/submissive relationship unfolds. I have not read similar novels, so I cannot compare them. The romance novels I've read had no kink to them. I recommend this for those who want both. Heard the author is filling a hole in the romance literature. Good for her!

Not entertaining
Graphic and unnecessary cruelty seemingly only for shock purposes. Poorly developed story, at times written from the perspective of an old man reminiscent of better times.

very happy to have found this writer
Finally a historical & lightly BDSM novel that is well-plotted, well-written, steamy, and hard to put down. Ms. Raymond has the ability to conjure up places and period details that feel real, and she does so without throwing in a bunch of silly nonsense that regularly passes for authenticity in the genre (for instance, words like "mayhap," which is a deal-breaker for me. I've read a ton of literature from the period as well as all of Georgette Heyer [still the gold standard for historical romance, in my view] and not once have I seen "mayhap" show its face). And instead of "young lady" (which she uses only once that I remember, and which feels all wrong for the region and the period), Ms. Raymond uses terms like "minx" and "chit" which better fit the times, She seems to have a handle on more weighty historical details just as well, and the novel brings places and times to life without being bogged down in minutiae. The struggles of her characters are believable and interesting. It was really wonderful to find a feisty protagonist who goes the mile....that is, doesn't stop at cutesiness...but follows courageously through with her beliefs. I also loved the way Nathaniel grew over the course of the novel- it was not forced but convincing and yet I didn't see it coming. The structure is M/F, which is what I tend to go for, but the minor F/F element is also sweet and interesting, and, moreover, it moves the plot along. I thought the pace was excellent and the sex scenes steamy without overwhelming the plot. This was the first novel I read by Jolynn Raymond and I plan to keep going...she is definitely a keeper. I am so happy to have found her. I have just started reading these erotic mildly bdsm books, but am already disheartened by how much bilge is out there. I was looking for someone new after binge-reading Cherise Sinclair (a true find), and though Ms. Raymond's setting and focus are very very different, both writers infuse their characters with humanity and with inner conflicts that are complex enough to carry the plot and justify the length of their novels. The most rewarding thing about both is that I didn't have to shut off parts of my brain to read them. There is a believable progressive element to Ms. Raymond's writing and as much feminism as is believable for the time, all of which I appreciated. Finally, having read up just a little about her on her website & some of her non-fiction on BDSM, I have to add that she approaches the genre in a very cool way- educational but not obtrusively. Looking forward to reading more of her historicals.

Two words for this read "very authentic"
Jolynn you did it this time. This book not only capitative me but it flowed so nicely. The references to the BDSM world was spot on. Even for that time period. I was going to only read a chapter or two but at 2:15 am I came to the end. Loved how it ended so many other possibilities it can lead to. Very fast and you can picture it in your minds eye the whole way through. Bravo to me this is a winner....thank you for entertaining me last night.

Steamy
This is a new author for me and it won't be the last. I have to say that I really did not like Nathaniel for quite a bit of this book although he does redeem himself by the end. Claudia pulled at my heart and I was happy with the end of her journey. There is quite a story here, it's not all wine and roses, and I just had to keep reading to find out the end result. I did love the ending! On another note, the book could use a good proof read which is something that typically turns me off. However, the plot and characters saw me through until the end.

Nice example of Stockholme Syndrome
Great read if you're into minimally edited literature that sounds like its been written by a serial rapist.

Desperately needs a good editor
First, let me say that this book is a promising start. It's got the potential to be a very good novel. However, beyond the well-written sex scenes, there is very little substance or plot to it. It's riddled with grammatical errors and misused, misspelled, or missing words. The shifting between perspectives is rarely clear. It has the potential to be awesome, but it desperately needs an editor and some revisions.
