Product Description After 2004's U.S. breakthrough success for U.K. favorite Muse, the band's second album, 2001's Origin of Symmetry, finally earns its stateside release. Last yeasr's Absolution and major performances across the country won legions of American fans for the band that was the prestigious closing act at London's V2004 Festival. Now these new fans can experience an earlier Muse with Origin of Symmetry. .com Pomposity, bombast, pretension and prog-rock: they're four crimes that blight the landscape of modern music and Origin Of Symmetry--the second record by Teignmouth, U.K. angst-rockers Muse--is guilty of every single one. But the truly astonishing thing about this record is the way it twists every one of these cardinal musical sins into spectacularly silly and starkly individual strengths. Where their debut album Showbiz was rightly dismissed as little more than Radiohead-lite, here Muse sound defiantly like their own band: on "New Born", they're torn somewhere between the purity of front man Matt Bellamy's angelic vocal tones and the corruption of a huge, dirty, distorted bass riff that electrifies the sound into crackling life; on the fraught, operatic "Bliss", they sound like an unholy--but very welcome--cross between synth-heavy Krautrock legends Tangerine Dream and youthful choirboy angst-peddlers JJ72; and even a wonderfully dippy take on the Nina Simone-popularised jazz standard "Feeling Good" is carried off with the requisite deadpan countenance. Bellamy's impassioned voice, in particular, is on spectacular form, soaring skywards until it cracks into a beautiful falsetto reminiscent of Jeff Buckley's greatest vocal moments. So gloriously overblown, it deserves to be huge--Origin Of Symmetry is a fascinating, flamboyant and satisfyingly individual album. --Louis Pattison

"You're swelling up - you're unstoppable..."
"Origin of Symmetry" by Muse took me a few listens to see how fun and experimental this album really is. This album was released in 2001 and this is Muse's sophomore effort. I don't have their debut album yet so I can't say if "Origin of Symmetry" is stronger or weaker than "Showbiz". This album is very different than the ones that follow this like "Absolution" and "Black Holes and Revelations". This record is slightly lo-fi and more alternative rock-sounding. It's not as glossy and some of the melodies/arrangements are simplistic and laid-back. But there's a handful of radio-friendly juggernauts like the synth/pop gem, "Bliss", the catchy, blistering brilliance of "Darkshines" (my personal favorite), and "Plug in Baby" which has the best guitar riff I've ever heard. Songs like "Megalomania" and "Screenager" show the band's softer side, and in "Micro Cuts" you hear Matthew Bellamy singing through a megaphone, musically it's the strongest track. "Hyper Music" is snarky and lively. Definitely lives up to its title. "New Born", "Space Dementia" (Bellamy is classically trained on the piano), and "Citizen Erased" are the real powerhouses. Very experimental and have multi-layered arrangements and gorgeous melodies. There's a cover of the jazz standard, "Feeling Good" which seems like an odd choice for the band to cover, but somehow it works. Bellamy turns the song on its head, and his vocals are buttery soft and show the power of his range (that falsetto, wow). Like I said, you probably won't enjoy this album on first listen. It took until the 4th listen for the songs to become familiar and reveal itself to me. Muse is one of my favorite bands. They always surprise me and never disappoint me. Enjoy!

good music
I really like the cd, although it's not as deep as 'the resistance'. The song 'Feeling good' is the initial reason I bought it because I heard it on youtube and loved it. The rest of the cd is also really good. I can always count of Muse to give me good music without a lot of unnecessary cursing. They've a very talented band.

They're incredible! So what's wrong with this picture?
I'm in the U.S. and have been following Muse since hearing Absolution, then on to Black Holes & Revelations, and now back to Origin of Symmetry. And each time, I'm fairly blown away, but am shocked that almost none of my American friends have heard of this band, even though they seem to be very popular in Europe. What's more, almost every time that a friend of mine hears one of their albums, they like it! Even if they're not usually into what I think is this harder-edged, often anthemic rock music with beautiful vocals the likes of, yes, Radiohead's Thom Yorke. I recently saw Muse in concert at MSG and Bellamy is highly deserving of greater fame in the U.S. He appears to be thoroughly multi-talented, with his enchanting vocals, his amazing guitar playing, and even his piano skills. When I purchased Origin of Symmetry, I was afraid to find a less catchy, less original, less well-developed version of Muse's later albums. I was ecstatic to discover that I was mistaken. There's enough that's the same (e.g., New Born, Bliss, and Plug in Baby) to remind you that, yes, this is Muse's sound (and you love it!) but also enough that's different (e.g., Feeling Good) to make you appreciate their range and inventiveness. Citizen Erased is actually one of my favorites so far, as it evokes for me a real sense of Orwell's 1984 put to music.

Same price as Best Buy!
The only reason i bought this on Amazon is because i had a birthday gift card and my copy was so scratched up i couldn't even listen to it. Amazon does sell this at the same price as Best Buy with the prime free shipping when you buy $25 so it was a no brainer for me although you can buy the cd from other sellers at lower prices they usually charge for shipping and the Amazon price was not bad at all! I love all the artwork included in this album and how it ties into the title! MUSE is my favorite band! Origin of Symmetry is a must have although I am working on getting the rest of their albums and if you are thinking about getting this cd, you can't go wrong. They have quite a mixture of different sounds and i absolutely hate to put a label on music, seriously why do we do that?? Matt Bellamy is a freaking genius and i am in awe of all the work he has put into making MUSE what it is today although all its members make it what it is, of course! and also am a big fan of their newer album (my latest obsession) "The Resistance"!

Stretch it like a birth squeeze...
Like a lot of people here in the US, I first learned of this band thanks to Stephenie Meyer, who mentioned Muse in the acknowledgements of her Twilight novels. Curious, I looked them up on Wikipedia, then immediately headed over to Amazon.com to hear what I could of their music. I first bought Showbiz, which I absolutely loved. Then came this, its followup, Origin of Symmetry. In fact I own all of their studio albums except their newest one (which I do intend to get at some point), as well as their CD/DVD combo HAARP. Origins is just as solid as Showbiz was and, in many ways, even more so. Whereas the opening track of Showbiz, Sunburn, opened with a neat piano arpeggio, New Born, Origins' opener, opens with a hauntingly beautiful piano riff and then quickly builds into a pounding rocker with some of the coolest lyrics ever. The second track. Bliss, is the other of my two favorites. It also opens with a dreamy keyboard before quickly picking up. The rest of the tracks, while in no way forgettable, haven't yet caught my attention the way the first two did. But they're definitely still worth listening and there aren't any that I skip.
