Frommer's EasyGuide to Amsterdam, Brussels and Bruges

Maps are the best
Love frommers guide books. Their maps are laminated in the back and I carry them around the whole time I’m in the city. Keeps me from getting lost. Always use their hotel recommendations

not a very easy guide
I only purchased because another reviewer complemented Frommer's pull out map. However the only pull out map provided is for Amsterdam. The maps for Brussels are segmented and incomplete, the same for Bruges. There is way too much focus on day trips to other cities. If you're going to present a guide for 3 specific cities, please include complete maps for all 3 cities, not just 1, and focus on those cities. And if you have an index, please have the index, at a minimum, include a list all the locations recommended and shown on the maps.

This is an unusually good guidebook!
I just got back and I'm sooo grateful I got this guide. I was got two others, and did a lot of research online but this one was by far the most accurate and well written (I ended up leaving the other 2 in the hotel room and bringing this one with me most days). I really appreciated that it gave exact pricing (unlike the others) so I knew how much money to carry with me each day, and I was able to keep to the overall budget I set for the trip. And the restaurants it recommended were very, very good! And many were newly opened (unlike the choices in the other guides which seemed to be just the old tourist traps). Maps were very handy too.But I probably relied upon this one most when I was planning the trip. Thanks to the really smart "Itineraries" chapter I was able to figure out how much time to give each city, and which side trips made the most sense (I ended up doing Amsterdam, Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp, Maastricht, Harlem, and Ghent---not in that order, but all were covered in the book). And WOW! We really LOVED Belgium and Holland! The museums! The chocolates! The lovely people! It really was one of our very best vacations.

A book that made our vacation better
In fact, if I hadn't had it we would have really missed out, because the book was very clear about the advance planning that needed to be done. I saw people being turned away from both the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum because they didn't know to book times tickets well in advance. 😊😊The book also gave excellent day by day plans for touring around (I visited Amsterdam and several Dutch cities). I got to see what I wanted without feeling like I was running myself ragged. The book breaks down things neighborhood by neighborhood so you don't waste too much time commuting which was particularly crucial in Amsterdam.Maps were helpful, too, especially the pull out map.And the restaurant picks, brown cafes (different than coffee houses) and the nightlife recommendations were really authentic---at a few I didn't see any other tourists which is something of a miracle in Amsterdam.Final kudos: there are really interesting tidbits about culture and history throughout the guide which really helped make Holland come to life for me! I kept reading things aloud to my husband, which normally would have annoyed him, but we both felt that the snippets were soooo helpful in letting us understand the signifigance of what we were seeing.
