The Common Core Companion: The Standards Decoded, Grades 9-12: What They Say, What They Mean, How to Teach Them (Corwin Literacy)

I thought this was extremely useful. However, there are a lot of spelling and grammatical mistakes, which I think is weird and slightly ironic for a Common Core book. I would definitely buy it again, but the editing mistakes are distracting and disappointing.

If I ever host another student teacher again, this is the book that I would make sure to require them to use for their lesson planning verbiage.Overall, this contains great ideas, and has all core subjects making the cross curricular approaches a bit more manageable.I will get great use from this book.UPDATE: 3/19/2015I just ordered this again. the woman that I share my classroom with loved this book so much that I gave her mine and then ordered a new one for myself. Yes. It was worth buying twice. Yes. It was worth sharing. I do wish the price tag was a bit lower, but this book is really worth it. :)

The ideal go-to-guide for teachers to truly understand the language and intentions of the Common Core Standards, this resource "unpacks" the Standards from both the teacher and student perspectives. Explanations of the academic vocabulary of the Standards and suggestions for approaching each make this the ultimate resource for truly understanding the expectations of the Common Core. I've used it as a guide in creating standards-based lessons and assessments, as well as in professional development workshops. The side-by-side format of ELA and History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects Standards makes content connections easy to see. Straight-forward and easy to use -- one of the best Common Core investments I've made.

This is a great resource! It gives an overview of each standard, what the students will need to know, what they will need to produce, and how the student will demonstrate understanding. The book also gives instructional steps for the standards. Basically each of the standards is unpacked for you. It's a great tool for generating ideas and saving time with breaking down the standards.

The book is wonderful but it only covers the English Language Arts standards. I hope they are working on a similar book for the Mathematical Standards which is what I wanted help with. I preordered it without a full description assuming that Common Core Companion would actually cover ALL the Common Core standards. If you want help with the English Language Arts standards (ELAS)for any academic subject, it's a wonderful book.I really want to give it 3 stars because I'm so disapointed but its coverage of the ELAS is 5 star. I averaged.

This book really helped me to understand some of the Common Core Standards more clearly. This book spends time clearly breaking down each standard and HOW that standard would look in the classroom. It does not provide any lesson plans or activities, but it's a great resource to use when building lessons or activities focused on Common Core.

We are using this as the basis of a professional learning community (PLC) at my school, and we have been very pleased with this book. We like how Burke explains the Common Core standards in language that everyone can understand--that aspect has been particularly helpful to those of us who are not English Language Arts but find ourselves needing to teach specific reading and writing skills. Burke gives examples and suggestions, as well. The book is extremely easy to use, as are all of Burke's books, and they're useful for extensive study and quick reference.

This is a great resource if you need the ELA standards in one place. I liked the suggestions that they give for students and for teachers. However, I was looking for the standards to be deconstructed as well. My lesson plans need to be more specific than 910W5--it needs to be broken down even further. Otherwise, this is a nice resource.
