Big power in a little package
Hello there tool shopper, This drill and impact driver combo set replaces my aging Makita 6914D 12V impact driver. I bought that tool in 2003 and it has been nothing but reliable and until now was by far the most used tool I own. This year the batteries' working time is down to 10 or 15 minutes making the tool usable but annoying with the constant battery swapping. I shopped around and after looking through new Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, Hitachi and Rigid I settled on this Bosch combo kit. I'm impressed by the compact size and substantial power of these tiny Bosch drivers. The impact driver advertises slightly higher RPMs and torque than my old Makita and is substantially smaller and lighter. By comparison the body and battery profile of the 6914D looks and feels like the new 18v drivers and is much bigger than this pair of 12v Bosch drivers. I always thought of my Makita unit as small and maneuverable; it's the only drill driver unit I ever used on a job or around the house. It was much much smaller than drills of its time and until now I never saw it as larger compared to other tools. Man, these two are shorter in height and length by sever inches. Any smaller and you couldn’t call it hand held because you couldn’t close your fingers around the handle! I thought about buying just an impact driver, however the price for the driver and batteries was so close to the price of the one tool kit it was worth it to me to have the drill around even if it won't get much use. I already have a removable chuck so not having one built into the drill is preferable for me. I can attach the chuck to either tool as needed and not bring a second tool along if it suits to just pack one for a job. There are times when the banging of the hammer and anvil in the impact driver was a bit much, mostly working in tight closed spaces like basements or outside where I could be bothering the neighbors. It will be nice to have a drill for times like that if the extra torque isn’t required. So, why not? The tools are remarkably small and feel very balanced in the hand. They both spin true and I like the rubber grip and bumpers on the sides of the tools. I can lay them any which way and not worry about beating up what I just laid them on. They will balance standing up on the battery pack like my old Makita but I would not suggest it on the job. I mention it b/c that is just how they feel when you hold them, nice and balanced. I lay mine on their side when working. You are probably wondering “Why not get the bigger 18v tools?” For me it is because only once in 12 years was I not able to drive what I trying to drive w 12v. I sistered a dozen 2x10's with glue and dozens of 4" #10 Spax and the Makita never missed a beat, even with the aging batteries. This includes using it to take the wheels off the car for brake jobs over the years. The only thing I couldn't drive with the old 12v was an 6" lag into an old treated 4x4. I seated it with a wrench and that was that. I should have prevailed the hole, but I didn't and it still worked out fine. The impact driver in this kit is advertised a little more torque than my old tool so unless manufacturer’s figured out how to fudge their specs last week I’m betting this one will do the same job as the last if not a little better. So far that’s been true for me, and from what I read in other reviews it’s been true for other builders too. For me 12v is plenty, so I spent the extra money on another tool (the reciprocating saw) instead of investing it in extra power for the odd times I might want it. If I’m driving big lags and I have trouble with the last inch I don’t mind getting out a wrench to finish them off. Call me cheap but those 18v batteries cost quite a bit more to replace. I like the no-memory Li-Ion batteries but I’ve had enough laptops to know they only have so many charge cycles and they last just about as long as the warranty. I’m betting on replacing them or buying an extra before I trade up tools so 12v feels like the way to go. Just about any tool from the big names will do the job you ask of it so I suggest you get the tool(s) you like using. You’re going to be looking at it a lot, if you don’t like looking at it you should at least be indifferent towards it. Why own a tool you don’t use, and why use a tool you don’t like? I like things that make my work easier and don’t cost a fortune, and I like these tools quite a lot. For me these are great to look at and have the combination of power and features that suit my needs. Happy tool hunting.

Get the set, great for home and automotive
I am a mechanic by trade and a jack of all trades and master of none. I use this set primarily in my shop for auto repair. The impact driver (the one that isn't adjustable torque) is great for around the shop/on cars. Its got enough power to remove most bolts (up to a 12mm head). I use it for valve covers, radiators, drain pans. Its strong enough to break most small to med sized bolts lose. It tightens really well also. I've used it for drilling around the house and driving in screws for blinds in dry wall and it worked perfect. It didn't strip out the screw heads and it had enough force to drive everything in. The battery lasts a long time (usually use it about 10 times a day and don't have to charge it till about the 3rd day +/-. It handled the drill bits well, except as others have said, there is a little play in the bit. As for the adjustable torque driver, its a great addition and has its place. I primarily use it for doing dash work and trim pieces. Its not super strong when it comes to breaking bolts lose, but it works well on smaller pieces. It all boils down to the right tool for the job. The battery last just as long as the other impact in this set. Its perfect for doing faceplate covers around the house and delicate stuff were you don't need a ton of torque to tighten, you just don't want to do it by hand. Overall I am very happy with the set. Great price (Snap On wants $240 for just the impact driver with a lesser warranty) and the Bosch warranty sealed the deal. I would rec this for auto mechanics and around the house. I think it would be great for contractors due to its size and the amount of power it has.

Great pair of tools, should cover almost any needs
So these replaced a 12yr old Dewalt 12v drill that was at the end of it's second set of batteries. While the Dewalt never had any problems other that battery life, the driver in this kit is half the size, half the weight and twice the power. Key points of the two tools are: Common: 1) Super fast charge, the 30min listed time is real and more than enough to keep up with use. 2) Super comfortable in your hand. Great fit and balance. 3) Wish the lights stayed on for a bit after you released the trigger. Milwaukee does this and it's a great feature when working in dark places. You are constantly trying to hold the trigger on these on just enough to get the light but not start the drill, it is possible. 4) Wish there was a spot to store one bit on the tool. Driver: 1) Quick change chuck is a huge time saver. I had one of these chucked in my old drill most of the time. Integration on this tool makes the tool length less than half of a large drill. This tool fits in all the tight spaces your big drill will not. 2) Plenty of power. I drilled a dozen old dry joists with driver and a 3/4" self feeding auger bit, no problem with battery left at the end. 3) OK light only on the bottom. Impactor: 1) If you haven't used an impact driver to run wood screws this will change your life. All the slipping/cam out you get trying to run 3" wood screws with a driver. And the extra force you apply to try and stop it. All a thing of the past. You can drive screws with this in your off hand with the tool upside down. It does all the work and never cams out. 2) Does a surprising job on old rusted screw removal. Helped a friend remove some ancient tie down points from his truck bed. He had given up with a screw driver and a bit in a ratchet. This powered them out with little effort. 3) Will drive 3/8" lags into pre-drilled holes without problems. 4) Great light with 360 degree coverage. 5) This will strip threads and snap bolt heads off. With great power comes great responsibility.

I bought the combo kit over the holidays when Amazon Canada lowered the price to $150 and then another $20 off from the Bosch instant rebate. You can't go wrong with the combo kit. I have not used the PS41 impact driver yet, but the PS21 cordless drill is great (lots of power). I read other reviews where people complained that it could only take 1/4" drill bit and not the common 3/8" drill bit. All my woodworking drill bits are 1/4" and any sizes I don't have, you can easily find them at any local hardware store. So I don't see what the problem is. There are also complaints about the bit wandering. If you read the instructions, it clearly states that you put the drill bit on the workpiece and then pull the trigger to start drilling. By doing this, I have had no issues with the drill bit wandering. I'm glad I did not but the PS31, which is the cordless drill model, which can take the #3/8" drill bit. I already have a corded drill that can do that, so there was no need for it. Besides let the corded drill handle the heavy duty drill bits or get the 18V cordless drill. I'm glad I made this purchase.
