Gilbert & Sullivan: Highlights from The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Yeomen of the Guard, Trial by Jury

Someone else commented earlier that he couldn't understand the words being sung on this CD. I made the mistake of thinking it was due to some cultural or musical deficit in the writer. I was wrong.Although I can't quite decide why, the actual words of G&S's songs are totally unintelligible on this music CD. Words seem to be crisply enunciated, but the sounds do not come through as English words. I doubt that a Welsh accent could account for it (though the only time I've heard Welsh accents was on Torchwood), because these are professional singers.I used to have some excellent G&S music CDs to which I could sing along, at the top of my lungs, feeling lighthearted while doing household tasks. This CD: no words; little joy.What I think is that, possibly, the recording timing (or speed or whatever the technical term would be for digital recording processes), is just very slightly speeded up, such that a listener doesn't really notice it on the background orchestral sound track, but the more subtle sounds that should be speech are massed/jumbled/compacted into meaninglessness.There is something fundamentally wrong with this CD.

Gilbert and Sullivan - Highlights - Telarc CD I have always considered that many of the Gilbert and Sullivan signature songs were very energetic, rousing and toe tapping. I found this Telarc collection of 28 selections exactly to my taste. These songs are from five different musical productions and were recorded during the period 1991-95. I cannot speak as to the technical aspects of this version contrasted to other collections nor can I ruminate upon this male or that female singer as compared to another. To be forthright I am not knowledgeable of these topics. I will just say I found this album very engaging and on that basis recommend it if you are in the market for a collection of Gilbert and Sullivan songs.I would suggest you turn up the volume, adjust the base and treble and be prepared to be entertained.

In the grand classic style, with lively music & rich Welch voices (think Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Richard Burton, Richard Harris), these keep me energetic and highly stimulated & entertained during kitchen work singing along especially with the rousing chorus & learning more of G&S' ever so clever, memorable, challenging lyrics & irresistable tunes you find yourself still hearing, whistling, singing after the CD ends. Not all the diction is distinct, but I love this anyway! Enjoy :)

This is a nice selection of songs from 5 different G&S operas. The words were fairly easy to understand, which was one of my main questions before purchasing. The quality of the recordings is also very good as far as I can tell. Because the tracks are pretty short, there are a lot of them.

The CD is fine. I would like the complete score for each play, which I am finding is hard to find.

This was an Excellent recording. This recording is what I expected and I would recommend it to other Gilbert and Sullivan fans.
