Buy Iran: A Modern History by Amanat, Abbas (ISBN: 9780300248937) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: First rate overview - This is an excellent single volume history of Iran where the chronology is explained on a thematic basis - e.g. the developing power of the central government in relation to the geographical periphery of the country during the course of the twentieth century. The bibliography is also very extensive, and set out under the thematic headings used in the text. A book I have no hesitation in recommending for all those wanting to better understand Iran. Review: Beautiful book about a fascinating country - This is beautifully presented book, giving a detailed but engaging narrative of Iranian history going back to the rise of the Safavid dynasty in the early sixteenth century. Prof. Amanat says it his interpretation of modern Iranian history, rather than an attempt to summarize the field: I find it a very compelling interpretation.

A deep scholarly enterprise
This is an absolute must for anyone seriously interested in not only modern Iran, but the whole of contemporary Middle East. It is the one book that must be on the reading list of all university courses on these matters

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the enigma that is modern Iran
Iran is the most important country that nobody understands, and this one book makes it understandable. Two reasons: 1. It is written by an Iranian, so he understands the Iranian psyche, and gets right into it from the outset 2. Unlike many/most Iranians, he is no national chauvinist, and says it all as it is, warts and all This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the enigma that is modern Iran, as well as any Iranians themselves who refuse to look at themselves in the mirror and still blame everyone but themselves for the revolution of 1979.

This is a beautiful book very well put together but I cannot comment yet on the written work as Like War and Piece, it will take a lot of time to read.

Un livre qui couvre bien l'histoire de l'Iran et surtout l'histoire la plus récente Assez volumineux, il expose en détail l'histoire compliquée mais passionnante de l'Iran

This is one of the finest books on the modern history of Iran. I was looking out for such a work on Iran by a scholar of Iranian origin from last few years. It is so beautifully written as I didn’t lose my interest in it despite the fact that it is a 900 pages lengthy work. Contents of the book are impressive and analysis of the facts is powerful with lucid language making the work outstanding.

A masterpiece that covers not only political and economic history but also changes in many fields. You can get all the basic info about how modern Iran came to be today, and would be expected to have new discussions after reading this. The author provides a scathing assessment of historical events and the subsequent situation in contemporary Iran, especially in the political realm. However he also freely points out that interference from outsiders, including Britain and Russia, was one of the major causes of modern Iran. It's easy to look at Iran as weird or to look at it with scorn. However, Iran hasn't carved out its history alone. At its foundation lies centuries of interaction with its surroundings, for better or for worse. This is a good writings reminds us that the history of a country or a community isn't only always a series of choices it makes, but also at the same time it cannot develop independently of its surroundings.
