Original Album Series

A totally unexpected release from Rhino’s (European import) inexpensive “Original Album Series”: the relatively obscure (in the U.S. at least) Welch band Man, who incorporated a mix of West Coast psychedelia, progressive rock, blues and pub rock. Of their 17 studio albums from 1969-2009, this 5 album collection has albums #3, 4, 5, 7 & 8 (missing album #6, their double 1973 release Back into the Future). I don’t think their first 4 albums were originally released in the U.S., so the first 2 albums in this box may be new to most U.S. listeners. As is typical of this Rhino series, each of the 5 discs are housed in mini cardboard replicas of the original album (missing would be original gatefold covers; this series only has a front/ back cover) which slip inside of a larger cardboard box about the size of a double cd jewel case (nice for taking up limited shelf space). No extra tracks, w/no info of any kind other than the tiny printing on the original album art, although the back of the box gives a track listing of each album. W/no info given, I have no idea if anything is re-mastered, but sound quality is very clean & crisp, and hallelujah (!!!), the playback levels between discs is quite even (unlike way too many in this series) so you can make your own playlist of the songs you like & have a consistent playback volume.

It is for me stunning to get to know this formidable Welsch band named MAN at this moment, and I keep asking myself why they did not achieve the level of public success that they deserve. This collection in particular shows a progressive rock band of the sixties-seventies in very good shape! Their songs are enjoyable, well executed, the guitar is sound is amazing and the music as a whole sticks to you! And the price of the collection of five albums is really good.

I was totally surprised how good the sound was for these CDs especially as some of them were not remastered. Fantastic bargain for the price. I would have gladly paid an extra $2-3 for a booklet saying which musicians were on the albums and who wrote the tracks. The good thing is that info can be easily found online. Most of the albums were really good with some really great individual tracks and nice tasty guitar. I'm going to try to order another from this series of multiple albums at a cheap price, assuming the audio sound on the other albums have the same excellent audio quality.

If you like Pink Floyd, Phish, and the Greatful Dead, you'll like Man. A great jam band with lots of influences such as arena rock, progressive rock, jazz, and a little English folk rock thrown in for good measure. I had never heard of this band, but thought I'd add to my cd collection. Great introduction to the band at a great price.

The first four CDs were very good, the fish-guitar album was somewhat weak. Man had their own unique style. If you like their style, check out Help Yourself.

in the early 70's i was stationed in germany. fulda to be exact and i turned on to this band from wales and it is great to listen to sounds i have not heard for quite some time. good guitar work good ideas behind the lyrics. and no they don't sing in gaelic.

CDs are not remastered (at least it is not indicated on package) - but sounds very good. Super collection of early (and best) recordings by this forgotten band.

This is a great deal on some fantastic music by this Welsh band that is not easy to find and definitely not at this price. They play progressive rock in a more hard rock style just like they were suppose to in the 70's.

One of the best purchases.

The Original Series is a wonderful concept whereby a number of a bands first LP's are remastered and then put onto Disc (CD) and placed into a Box set with the liner sleeves each being the Original Album Cover Art. I bought this one as trying to find the work of the band called MAN is extremely HARD. Trying to find the band by Goggling the word MAN gets you everything with the first three letters M.A.N and there is a great deal of stuff with those letters, but NO Band called MAN. So I simply had to keep searching until I finally found what I wanted and that took a great deal of times. My advice to you should you be interested in buying this or any MAN music is to use the link on the left hand side to connect to the Amazon page and from there buy what you want. MAN is truly that difficult to find which is too bad because they are truly one of the Premier Progressive Rock Bands from the U.K that came out of the 70's. The same can be said for another band named P.F.M (Premateria, Fornaria, Marconi.) These also were very big at the same time but they had a larger Producer connection...They were connected to the Robert Stigwood Organization and shared the same Producer as King Crimson for a Time which was spectacular for a small band...Spigomars

Five great albums by excellent Welsh band Man. No extra songs (unlike the individual releases of these albums by Esoteric Records) and no sleeve notes or anything but good music at a good price. Keep on Crinting!

This box set fills the gaps in my collection nicely. Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day as well as Rhinos Winos and Lunatics are the key pieces.
