Yes indeed! It DOES hold a whole pound of butter! -- But now I have to change my rating to 1 star after use.
It's just what I wanted! We have a large family. This is the perfect design for us. I can't understand putting a stick of butter onto a "plate" and then covering it. In our family it gets all over the plate area (even to the edges beyond the place where the cover actually covers). It also gets inside the cover -- I suppose some of the kids are less than careful when they cover the stick and it smashes into the inside walls of the cover.I wanted something to put the stick "IN" and then set a cover on top -- you know, like they have tubs of butter at the store. The butter goes in, the cover on top and the kids can dig down into it. There's always some cleanup around here with butter, but this way is a lot easier and nicer looking. I used to always have to try and neaten the butter up on our regular butter dish and carefully clean off the excess that went beyond where the cover touches. As you can tell from my title -- another nice thing for our large family is that it holds a whole 4 sticks! I won't have to fill it every day or two.I believe this will do nicely for us -- perfect! Oh -- the off-white is an ivory. It's really nice, gives you a country feel.**May 19, 2008 -- Unfortunately I must return and revise my review. One of the butter dishes (I bought 2) had an unseen hairline crack that I didn't notice until we started using it -- then slowly I noticed the butter was seeping through it into the ceramic. The second one's wooden cover became warped even though I hand washed it as directed. I had been surprised that the wooden cover was unfinished -- no varnish or anything to seal the wood, but I figured it would be like a cutting board and there would be no problem. That apparently wasn't the case and it looks like the wood really should be sealed to prevent warping. I didn't even soak it, I just hand washed it and rinsed it. It shouldn't warp like that. I would have to lower my rating to 1 star because of these problems.

Very dissappointed
I have tried three of these black butter dishes now. The lids do not fit on any of them. I assume this is a defect in the product. I have the bread bin and the lid fits with no problem. I wish I had read the reviews prior to ordering.

Disappointed
I just received my second butter dish and again I must return it!! As with the first one the lid does not fit on properly. The grooves in the timber don't match the rim of the ceramic base so it wobbles around and sits on an angle. So disappointed as I love the look of it and it was just what I was looking for!!

Dissappointed
I received butter dish, was exactly what I was looking for. Only issue I have is that the wooden lid does not fit on dish! Returned dish and received replacement, and the same thing happened. Lid does not fit on the dish. I am going to try one more time to exchange, and if that one isn't right I will have to look for something else.

Solid product
I really like this product. Nothing too special but easy to clean and nice to have with matching bread bin.

Great Butter Dish !
Recently pruchased this dish through Amazon from a 3rd party vendor & i love it . .Nice & roomy ( holds up to a pound of butter ) & is long enough to easily accomodate butter sticks. It could also easily accomodate 2 - 8 oz packages of cream cheese or the like, should you choose to go that route. It's nicely made ( in Portugal ) & the crock itself is stoneware, so is dishwasher safe. The lid is carved birchwood & the cleaning recommendation for that is simply wiping off. Always a good idea to use mineral oil on wooden kitchen products to keep them looking well & to prevent cracking however, so i applied some to the wooden lid & allowed it to soak in for a time at room temperature. ( Mineral oil is cheap, non-toxic, will not go rancid & is, in fact, the oil used in wipes specifically designed for cutting boards. )The color i chose was the light blue, which is a true light robin's egg blue. Makes me smile every time i see it ! :)If this sounds like what you're looking for, don't hesitate & 'nJoy . .

top did not fit
I loved the bottom but I had to whittle the top. The wood is from a green tree and i live in a dry climate so it could have warped. Also I got someone elses return with the box being stained with butter. As for the product the bottom is an awesome idea just wish the top fit better
