Learning Welsh is more challenging than learning French, which is challenging enough! Like French, Welsh has masculine and feminine nouns, adjectives must agree with the sex of the nouns they describe, verbs conjugate in different and complicated ways, accents over vowels change how they sound, and so on. BUT Welsh also has a different alphabet with 28 letters, more vowels, some strange sounds to master (for example ll, the double l), letters that sound completely different from what might be expected (for example f is pronounced as v - there is no v in Welsh - and ff is pronounced like f) and, worst of all, "mutations" where the spelling and speaking of the beginnings of some words change depending on what precedes them. There is no definite article, and the word order in sentences is different too. All that presents an uphill struggle for a beginner.This wonderful little grammar guide unravels all these complexities in a particularly straightforward way so that a little swotting delivers a lot of value. My wife is a Welsh-speaking native so I have the benefit of friendly instruction on pronunciation - that helps to make sense of it too - but the foundations, the grammar, matter more than anything else for a beginner. Highly recommended.

Hard going but very useful to help with learning grammar. Excellent reference book but I’d start with Cadw Swn first before purchasing this book.

Whether you are an absolute learner or at intermediate level this book is one to buy if you are learning Welsh. I have worn out two copies to date, as it is an excellent and readable learning guide. It is also one that is useful for North Welsh learners, of which I am one. The presentation of grammar structures is clear and not difficult to understand. A real asset to my library.

This is a great little book for the Welsh beginner - it was recommended by our teacher and I am so glad I bought it. It helps to unravel some of the mysteries of this language for the complete novice.
