Watch out, this is a wall unit!
The description of the product is misleading.....it is NOT a chimney hood but a wall unit. I had to purchase another model.Suppliers were gracious to allow a return beyond the date, but sadly the shipment costs were too high so I now have the two hoods.

Great vent hood
I love love to cook-I dislike the smell of food lingering in the kitchen or hallway when the door is open. so we got this as a remedy. This GE chimney vent hood, has bright built in lights, memory etc functions, varying speeds when you don't have it on highest setting it senses temperature (hot) change and adjusts to a higher fan speed, I love how the filter is washable which I hand wash about every three(3) months .Purchased in the spring 2011 still going strong. I love what this does for the kitchen/cook-top in terms of getting all kinds of smells to "magically" disappear , ethnic dishes with pungent "lingering" smell, seafood, deep frying etc.because its vented for outside, our neighbor said she can tell when I am cooking especially baking she smells the food when shes out her yard.

Filters cost $270/ year
Check out the cost of the charcoal filters. They can only be purchased by GE. You can get some hood filters for under $5. This one will cost you $270 for two required filters each year. There is no reason why they had to design them to be so expensive. IT is encased in a heavy casing. If the case was designed to open or just to hold a cheap filter, it could cost under $5 to replace the filter.Every few years, you will pay the entire cost of this pricey appliance just for the filters. We don't find that they work all that well at clearing the air. After you waste money on this product, you will be wasting thousands of dollars on filters in the years to come.

great looks and works great too!!
Pros: Looks great! Lighting is bright a illuminates the cooking surface well. Fan has 4 speeds and if vented to the outside will do a good job of keeping odors out of the house.Cons: The fan is loud esp. on speeds 2-4 and the duct work was built assuming this hood will vent straight up through the roof so it comes with a spring loaded flap to prevent cold down drafts. The flap was clanking around on low speed so I just pulled it out...On speeds 2-4 are when the fan starts to get noticeably loud. To be fair to GE, there are explicit instructions to keep the vent ducting 8" large with with minimal bends and a short overall length; my installation does not exactly meet the install specs but it is still louder than I would expect.Overall I would buy it again though, low speed does the trick 99% of the time unless we burned something, etc and even then we only kick the fan speed up for a few minutes.
