Another new amateur radio operator has a permanently-mounted antenna to use with his new portable radio - I usually start them with magnetic mounts, but he insisted he wanted "an antenna like yours" (actually, I have four, three on the roof and a 10-80 meter on the bumper, but I have an SUV, he has a Civic). The Larsen mounts are practically indestructible; two of the roof mounts on my vehicle are in excess of 15 years old, on their third vehicle, and still mechanically sound and working like the day I bought them. The third is, in fact, exactly like this, and it's only a few months old - originally hooked to a 2m/70cm portable, it's since been adapted to use on a much higher-powered mobile radio, and it continues to work magnificently. The cable is, in the event you need to know, double-shielded, solid center-conductor RG58A/U, probably the stoutest mobile cable you can buy; it is not, however as flexible at either the single-shielded or the stranded center-conductor cable, but if you're going to install it and move it only when the vehicle is replaced, this is absolutely the cable you want. And, for those that complain that cables and mounts aren't "built like they used to be", let me reassure you; this cable's workmanship and hardware is everything that I've ever expected a Larsen assembly to be - simply the best. And saving $7 by buying it here (Everything Authentic) makes it a pretty good deal, too.
