I’m brand new and not sure how I would connect these to my ft-891 man pack ? What cables do you use to attach the antenna to radio ?

Well, I use the antennas on my car so I bought a mount for that. The antennas use a standard 3/8 stud mount that you can find with any CB radio mounts online. As for using this antenna for a backpack I'm not sure that it would work for that because you would need a ground plane. Hope that helps.

Is the fiberglass section hollow so that the SS whip can be stored inside the lower section for transport?

I have these and the MFJ you can store the stringer inside the fiberglass part for transport. I do not do that because it is a pain to reset them when you want to use them. What I do is set the stringer to the correct length (more or less) and put the antennas in a fishing rod case which holds all my antennas and the mag mount. I engraved the band on the chrome part of the stringer so it is hard to mix them up but you would know quick if you were to have the wrong stringer on the fiberglass coil, it just does not load. BTW, you can not go wrong with these, I have nearly 10K contacts activating POTA parks using these antennas.

I bought the 40m version of this hamstick. The recommended whip length is 8” (from top of fiberglass to top of whip). Should any excess be trimmed?

Well, I did not trim the excess from mine and it was more than 8". If you had a lot extending into the coil MFJ at least recommends that you trim it but these are designed differently from the MFJ hamsticks. I have both and did not feel the need to trim either brands. Personally I would live with them for a while before I would even consider trimming them.

Are the whips paired the way they are ordered in the picture? I got my order and there are no instructions

Look again at the packaging. The instructions are on a small piece of paper not on the box. As for the whips, I had to move every one of them to get my them tuned.
