Zarbul Masalha: 151 Afghan Dari Proverbs (Third Edition)

This book is a gold mine. It has a lot of pithy wisdom, it's in English AND Pashto (which is rare) and is very well received by refugees and immigrants from the middle east - many of whom talk/speak in Pashto, Dari, Uzbeki, Farsi, Turkmenistani etc etc etc and in their culture reading is NOT a given. This book becomes a Portal for understandings, linguistic translation. and cultural understanding !!!

This is a great product. The proverbs are in Dari, romanized in English, literal English, and explained. Some of them are also given an English equivalent. The first pages of the book offer history, support, and details.

Great book excellent format. Triggers insightful thoughts and ideas that are timeless and beautifully explained. Many commonly known English sayings interestingly repeated with culturally adjusted in similes and metaphors

I use these in my engagements as a military officer working with Afghans. I do not speak Dari but that is okay. We laugh together at my attempt to speak Dari and I try to pick a proverb useful to the situation we are facing. I highly recommend this if you work with Afghans; poetry and proverbs are integral to their culture.

It is great for learning or reviewing Dari ( forerunner to Farsi), with pronunciation and English translation. Thank you.

I ordered this on Kindle. It is good, but limited. A third or more of the proverbs are not in common usage, but either literary in origin or just not commonly used. It is assumed that the reader will already be somewhat fluent in Dari and if so, it is far more useful than if one is not. Layout and placement on each page is good and easy to use with both English and Persian script in use. There is a very handy Appendix (in English) that gives the origin for each proverb and fills out an interpretation of meaning. For my personal way of using books, it would be more useful to have the text in my hand than on my screen. If I were to purchase it again, I would order it in the book form. For my own use, I would rank the text as 4+ stars, but for a general readership, I think 3 stars is a better number.
