Consolidated PB2Y Coronado (Naval Fighters, 85)

My father was a pilot on that kind of airplane during WWII. I wish he were still alive to see the book! We did go to the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola to see the last surviving PB2Y several years ago and he loved seeing the plane.

I've been aware of the Naval Fighters series for some time. As a former patrol plane pilot I am interested in patrol planes and this book is far more detailed than I expected and had much more operational history than I expected. Highly recommended!

A well researched book of a little known airplane of WWII. A great book!!! Amazon price was $ 13.00 less than the brand-new price and it appeared to be "Brand- new". I especially enjoyed Mr. Hoffman's book on the PBM Mariner as well.

...complemented with the usual Naval Fighters detailed photographic coverage.Another welcome step back in time for the Naval Fighters series as it tackles another World War II aircraft. The format is familiar - 8-1/2" x 11", square bound, 192 page card cover with color restricted to the front and rear covers. I have doubts about the front cover - it looks colorized. The typical Naval Fighters treatment is in evidence with detailed photographic coverage of all versions. Both close up/interior shots and complete aircraft shots are well represented. Contemporary technical manual drawings are in evidence and there are reviews of the few plastic model kits of the PB2Y.What makes this book stand out is the very detailed service history of the aircraft. Author Hoffman has really done his homework and one gets the impression that every aircraft movement is documented and every surviving crewman interviewed. This is rare for the Naval Fighters series but very welcome and I hope that we see future volumes follow the same pattern.There are a few minor problems. Foremost among them is the hit and miss editing that has marred more than a few Naval Fighters volumes. The most egregious examples here are entire paragraphs repeated in different sections of the text.But don't let that put anyone off. The book offers outstanding value for the rather high retail price. I recommend it highly.

Ancora un interessante titolo della collana Naval Fighters di Steve Ginter. Questa serie ha ormai superato il centinaio di titoli e le auguro di proseguire ancora a lungo perché permette al lettore di approfondire sia mostri sacri della storia dell'aviazione sia, soprattutto, un rilevante numero di velivoli poco o per nulla conosciuti anche da molti appassionati. L'unica reale limitazione è una concezione old-style che si nota nei contenuti e nell'impaginazione, insieme ad un costo appena superiore a quanto sarebbe lecito attendersi (attenzione: l'approfondimento, la ricerca e la specializzazione devono essere giustamente pagati, altrimenti si è liberi di fare da se) unici motivi per i quali le stelle del voto finale sono solo quattro.Questo volume dedicato al Consolidated PB2Y Coronado è tra quelli "corposi" con poco meno di 200 pagine. Come di consueto il colore è limitato alle pagine di copertina essendo tutto il resto dei contenuti in bianco e nero.Il testo si lascia leggere agevolmente e descrive tutte le versioni di questo idrovolante insieme alla sua storia con contenuti principalmente tecnici e operativi che non indulgono nel racconto come caratteristica principale di questa serie. Una tabella elenca tutti i BuNo dei velivoli prodotti e la loro assegnazione seguita da un'altra sugli accident reports.Fotografie e disegni, incluso materiale tratto dalla manualistica ufficiale, sono presenti un gran numero e consentono di farsi un'idea completa del velivolo risultando utili anche ai modellisti cui sono dedicati anche dei disegni in scala (1/144 viste le dimensioni di questo idrovolante).Se siete interessati al Coronado è un fascicolo da prendere al volo.
