Never Will I Go Back to Springs
The background: My wife and I bought our first king size bed in April 2005. Three years later the thing was already sagging down the middle. We lived with it for a year and then finally made a warranty claim. The company stripped the bed down to the springs and rebuilt a new mattress. It lasted 8 months before terrible again. So I read Consumer Reports and lo and behold, besides the fact that it states that mattresses are the number one inquired about review next to cars, they don't actually rate any mattresses. I guess it is b/c the companies give each store their own model so it is impossible to compare. Consumer Reports did, however, give satisfaction survey numbers on the different manufacturers. It was amazing. All but one were 50% or lower (the question, I believe, was would you buy another mattress of this brand). Most were much lower than 50% (Serta was 35%). I mean WOW. It is disheartening to think that the vast majority of people are unhappy with their beds. And yes, this includes those Sleep Number, outrageously priced people (I can buy an inflatable queen mattress at Wal-Mart for $15. Why does putting a case around it make it worth $3,000?)Well, the ONE COMPANY that had higher than 50% was Tempur Pedic (around 60%, not great, but better than the rest). Problem is, even though I could afford it, there is no way I am paying $3,300 for a 12" king size mattress. My first thought is, "China makes everything for 1/100th of the cost", so I started Googling memory foam mattresses. To my pleasant surprise the good ol' USA came through with Sleep Innovations.I read all, and I mean all the reviews. I initially thought the Amazon Vine reviews (which are a lot) were bogus, purposely placed customer reviews. I have since learned (from a negative comment) that just means the company gave a bunch of free beds to get Amazon Vine reviews. But even discounting the Vines' reviews, you could see that nearly all people were happy with it. I was still concerned though because I read horror stories from customer reviews on another off-brand memory mattress at Amazon. Stuff like the corners not ever flattening out and the company saying it could only be returned in the original box (which is absolutely impossible - the thing is vacuum sealed in there). So I called the company. I am expecting terrible service and it was the complete opposite. I got someone right away. A very nice, non-outsourced woman said that the company had been in business for 12 years; yes I could return the mattress within the 20 year warranty and no I would not have to use the same box (which when I asked that question, she stated flatly, "that would be impossible").The product: I took the dive and bought it. The real test is how it will feel in 5 years, but I can't fast forward five years to give you a final verdict. And to that end, I figured I could get six of these for the price of a Tempur Pedic. But I can say that two weeks into it and I love this bed. A couple bullet points:1. No problem with the hotness issue you read about, but it is not summer. I figure worst case scenario, I will add an egg crate on top to have some separation from my body and the foam mattress if I have a heat issue. I should note that we had an 80 degree day recently and I had no heat issues that night.UPDATE: Have had 99 degree weather days and no problems (of course we use the A/C (keep it on 78), but I thought I should add that).2. Foam smell went away. Again, if it hadn't, I would have bought an egg crate so my nose wasn't right on it.3. It is a firm mattress. You would never believe it if you sat on the side but when your whole body is stretched out, it is firm. It is a good firm though. I always thought I was a soft mattress guy, but after sleeping 4 years on a pillow top and a bad back to show it, I am making the switch. I figured if I needed it softer, I could buy an egg crate (see a pattern here?).4. DO NOT TAKE OFF THE WHITE COTTON COVER. This is apparently the equivalent of the do not remove for penalty of jail tag. If you read the brochure that comes with the mattress it tells you that the warranty is void if you do that. So put some other cover over that if you must.5. My wife has a memory foam pillow and it contours big time to your head and if you move your head, it is like you are squishing down Mount Everest again. This mattress is not like that. Very mild contouring which I think is a real plus.6. As other reviews say, it is heavy as Hades. I got it upstairs with me pushing it up with my back and my wife getting it over each stair hump. I would NOT recommend this if you have a bad back, etc. Get a couple guys to do it.Anyway it is late, I am tired, and I have a fantastic bed to go sleep in.UPDATE: Unfortunately, we have had numerous 100+ degree weather days here in Georgia. Fortunately, however, I have not had any problems with feeling hot because of the bed.UPDATE: Year later, no sagging, still very happy.UPDATE: Two years later, no sagging, still very happy.UPDATE: Three years later, no sagging, still very happy.UPDATE: Well after four years, we noticed the memory foam top 2.5 inches was much softer than when we bought it. I guess it is to be expected, but we want a very firm mattress. Best option is flipping over and putting your own new memory foam topper on. That will make this a 14" tall mattress, which makes me think maybe it would have been better to start with the 10" model. So I pulled the warranty card and got a new mattress. But I hesitate in saying anyone could do the same. According to the website, you have to have a 1.5" permanent indention to meet warranty requirements (by way of contrast, the exorbitantly priced TempurPedic only requires a .75" permanent indention). I mentioned to the customer service rep that I have loved the bed and in fact authored this review. I cannot say whether that made a difference which is why I hesitate in saying anyone could do the same.Note, however, that the couple I gave my 4 y/o bed to LOVES the bed and has no problem with it. As I said, I think it would be perfectly fine for anyone who does not want a firm top.UPDATE 5/17/18: Still love it!

Sleeps Like A Dream: Especially if you suffer from Back Problems or Restless Leg Syndrome
I have to say, I was wary of a mail order foam mattress, but the Sleep Innovations 12-in Shiloh mattress has exceeded all my expectations!!After injuring my back in 2005 and subsequently developing restless leg syndrome, sleeping the last 15 years had been a nightmare for both my wife and I. We had always slept on spring mattresses and found they quickly sagged and became lumpy and had to be replaced every couple of years...and mattresses aren't cheap. On the spring mattress, I'd have a few months of great sleep which quickly deteriorated as the bed sagged, putting pressure on my spinal nerves causing all sorts of on-going pain and discomfort. The only way I could sleep was to prop pillows in front of me and behind me to keep me perfectly on my side. Plus, my night time muscle spasms and twitching from the restless leg syndrome amounted to interrupted sleep for my spouse. It was just an overall miserable experience for both of us.Of course, a well-known brand name memory foam mattress company claimed unrivaled sleep and comfort, especially with those of us with back problems and restless sleepers. However, we just could not afford the price tag.Introducing Sleep Innovations: February 2016, my wife and I just could not tolerate another night on our lumpy queen spring mattress. Now she was also in constant pain from back problems (probably due to the spring mattress). During hours of research, trying to find an affordable mattress, we kept running across favorable reviews of a memory foam mattress called Sleep Innovations. After more weeks of hesitancy over buying a mail order mattress, sight unseen, we decided to take, hold our breath, the plunge and order the Shiloh from Amazon. We debated the merits of the other models from Sleep Innovations and decided to place our bets on the model that had the most reviews - the Shiloh. The mattress arrived two days later by UPS in a box that seemed way too small to possibly hold a king sized mattress. My wife wondered if we had been sent the twin mattress by mistake. The box clearly indicated that it had been packed in September and held a king sized mattress. The box compact but fairly heavy so we laid down some towels and dragged the box from the back door into the bedroom where we removed the box. The mattress is vacuumed packed in plastic, wrapped in a nylon sleeve like a sausage, wrapped in cardboard, and placed in the box. We carefully followed the instructions to cut open the plastic bag and slowly let the mattress unfold. At the factory, the mattress is first folded in half and then in thirds. Although some reviewers and the brochure indicated an initial odor, ours was odorless. As we cut the plastic bag away, I half expected the mattress to spring open like a life raft, but instead it was a slow and deliberate process (it probably took less than a minute to unfold the mattress). Then, as recommended, we left the crumpled mattress sitting on the floor to continue its 72 hour process to re-size itself.Although the brochure indicates you can sleep on the mattress during this 72 hour period, other reviewers had cautioned us to wait the full 72 hour period before using the mattress. It has been an unseasonable warm winter here in North Carolina, and the mattress arrived during a week with temperatures in the 70's. By evening (less that 12 hours after receiving the mattress), it was almost completely flat (just the 4 corners were still sticking up off the floor), so we decided to sleep on it. (By the next morning, the mattress was perfectly flat, but we continued not to put anything on it during the day for the full 72 hours just to make sure we did not impeded its process to return to its initial size). The mattress is 2 layers of foam in a zippered cover (which you are cautioned not to open or it will void the warranty). However, you can easily see that the base 7.5 inches is a high density foam that holds the shape of the bed. The top 2.5 inches are a memory foam that conforms to your body shape within a few minutes of getting into the bed. Though some reviewers said the mattress was too firm, I have always preferred firm to extra-firm mattresses and found the Shiloh to be perfect. Even my wife, who prefers a less firm mattress, says the Sleep Innovations Shiloh is not too firm. We bought the 12 inch mattress figuring we could add an additional memory foam topper from Sleep Innovations in the event we found the bed too firm. However, both my wife and I agree that the bed is not too firm and does not need an additional topper.A memory foam mattress is a different sleeping experience if you are used to a spring mattress. I'd say it took us both about a week to get used to it, but we found mattress to be comfortable immediately the first night. It's hard to describe, but it is just different sleeping on foam. When you first sit on the bed or get in it, the bed feels really firm. But as your body warms up the top layer of memory foam, you slowly settle into the foam for a really comfortable night's sleep. The next morning, when you get out of bed, the foam slowly cools to room temperature and returns to it's original shape, with no permanent indentations. One of best things about the foam mattress is that you remain completely isolated from your partner rolling over, or in my case, restless twitching legs. On a spring mattress, your partner's every toss, turn and twitch is transmitted across the mattress. So if either one of you is a restless sleeper, the other one knows it. Not so on a memory foam mattress. All motions are absorbed by the foam. (There used to be a commercial on TV showing a glass of water sitting on a mattress (one foam and one spring) and a bowling ball was dropped on to the mattress. The glass of water on the spring mattress went flying, but the glass on the foam mattress was undisturbed. I never believed the commercial, but after sleeping for a week on the Sleep Innovations memory foam mattress, it is absolutely true!) My wife reports that she no longer feels my legs twitch at night, and I certainly can not feel her roll over at any point. Also, the thing about memory foam mattresses, you really don't roll around as much at night because there aren't the pressure points that exist with a spring mattress. As far as the heat issue; we have found none. Both my wife and I like to sleep cool and often run the ceiling fan at night during the summer, even with central a/c. Both of us have been perfectly comfortable temperature-wise during the past week with temperatures in the 70's.Overall, I would wholeheartedly recommend this mattress. And, it for some reason, you did find it too firm, I would think that a an additional memory foam topper would take care of it. However, my wife and I have both found the mattress to be super comfortable so far. I'll be updating this post periodically to give continuing feedback of our experience.***1 month update: After about two weeks, my wife decided that the mattress felt too hard - that she didn't sink into the mattress at all. We are both lightweight people and she was correct in her assessment, it felt as though we were laying on top of the mattress slab. Although, as my body warmed the top foam layer, it did somewhat conform to me, it was lacking a difficult to describe "cozy" feeling. Now perhaps if our weights were closer to the average American weight, we would sink into the foam more. But my wife came up with the perfect solution to give the mattress the missing level of coziness...she purchased as fiber-filled mattress topper from a local national retailer. We put the mattress topped between the mattress and the mattress cover. My wife now says she sleeps better than she has ever slept in her life!***2 month update: Still loving the mattress with the "after-market" mattress topper. We have had some warm days and cold nights this spring so far. I would say the mattress does not seem any hotter than a traditional spring mattress, however, we do have central air. I have noticed, however, that the Sleep Innovations foam is warmer on the cool evenings than the spring mattress. I notice it the most if I get up at night to use the restroom, when I get back in bed, the foam is still warm and pliable where I had been sleeping - whereas the old spring mattress would have returned to sub-zero freezing temperatures in the span of the 90 seconds I was in the bathroom. We both are loving the mattress and can't imagine ever going back to a spring mattress after this experience!
