Sadly, don't waste your time
I cannot believe how disappointing this movie was. I don't have a lot of time to watch movies these days. I found a couple of hours yesterday and decided to watch a romantic comedy. How can a person go wrong with Tom Hanks and Julie Roberts? This movie was just that: wrong. Here's why: character development choppy - plot line choppy with too many leaps between different thought threads; none of which are ever fully developed. We don't really see how both Tom and Julia's characters journey their individual trials to become. We see their struggles and obstacles. But we don't see the transition from who they were to who they ultimately become. Of course they become amazing people in the last five minutes of the movie. It just feels choppy and under developed. Such a shame.

Surprisingly good romantic comedy that will have you chuckling
Larry Crowne was a romantic comedy featuring Tom Hanks as Larry and Julia Roberts as Professor Mercy Tainot. Larry is an older man who has to restart his life. He gets fired from his job at a large Walmart type store and can’t find other employment. He’s worried about what will happen to his house and decides to go to the local community college to learn some new skills. There he meets Professor Tainot who teaches his speech class. He not only impresses her scholastically, but personally as well and hence the romance. The movie is full of interesting people. Larry’s neighbor Lamar for incident has a constant yard sale. Wilmer Valderrama as Dell plays a great jealous boyfriend and Rami Malek as Steve is a goofy college student. The real gem however is the relationship between Larry and Prof. Tainot. It’s very cute and endaring as Larry wins her over slowly but surely. It’s worth the price of admission. There’s lots of subtle humor as well. Tainot for instance has an 8 am speech class which she can barely wake up to teach. When she first walks in there aren’t enough students and she cancels it until Larry walks in and makes the required number of attendees. Then the first student who asks a question stops in the middle because he gets a phone call and makes Ms. Tainot wait until he’s done. She’s not having it.Overall this was far better than I thought it would be.C

So Much Talent Wasted on this Movie
Viewers expect a lot from Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks because they've made iconic movies. But this drab, predictable, sophomoric product is a waste of their talent. Seems Mr. Hanks was co-writer of the screenplay. He should not do that again; stick to your strength, Tom... just act. Roberts' character was wooden. Indeed both character leads were unlikable. They couldn't even kiss good. Further, its amazing how many breezy interracial relationships were crammed into this one leftist film. Cedric TE is a fine actor but in how many towns do we find the lovey-dovey racial smorgasbord this film depicts? I felt I was looking at a makeover of the Truman Story... without Carrey's brilliant humor. This movie rates two fooey's.

Tom Hanks does midlife crisis
All the spoilers here, get some nice fresh spoilers here! Many mid life crisis stereotypes are full of rage and anger and bitter divorces and fast vehicles and significantly younger partners and foolish life choices trying to recapture fast-fleeting youth. And then there's Tom Hanks.Middle aged big box store employee gets fired over a ridiculous policy. He's already divorced, and doesn't badmouth his ex. His neighbors are good to him, and diverse. He decides to go back to college, and meets Manic Pixie Dream Girl while there. Here's the unfailingly wholesome Tom Hanks part - he doesn't date Manic Pixie Dream Girl, because that would be age inappropriate. No, he falls for his college prof instead, a jaded yet beautiful and intelligent woman closer to his age. And their romance stays light and flirty, not full-on pornographic. Also? No hulking motorcycle for this midlife crisis, it's a fuel efficient scooter. With a helmet. Driven at an appropriate speed, with a "gang" of other safety conscious scooter drivers. It's a cute, feel-good movie that's a nice way to pass the evening in these fairly not wholesome, family friendly times. Kudos to the cast and crew of this one.

Loved it!
I absolutely loved this movie. I am a non traditional student, and can tell you that this story is similar to my own in many ways. Tom Hanks is terrific as a middle-aged man who has been fired because he doesn't have a degree. He goes back to college, and takes a communications class. Enter Julia Roberts, his instructor at the local community college. She has a bad attitude about her students, but Hank's character changes all of that in some very entertaining ways.Good, clean (for the most part), light-hearted fun. Suitable, and even recommended, for older children on up. Hank's character is a very good person, and his good example shines through as the bottom line of this movie. So in essence he teaches us all lessons in how to be kind to others, the importance of being honest and trustworthy, the importance of hard work, how to be a good friend, and finally, why we all need to be more respectful.

A good movie for a night when you don't have anything else to do.
I am just a little tired of movies that take an "older" couple, dye their hair, apply strategic eye makeup, and young clothes, and suddenly restores the passion of youth to them. Why do they do that? Being older than middle age is actually quite wonderful, and you don't need to have older actors playing incognito-aged characters in order to add romance is not necessary. It was cute, though, except that it was really shallow, like people automatically falling in love because of one night of kissing. Why would you not want to date more than one person if you got out of a long-term relationship due to incompatibility. You see a guy in your class who, unlike everyone else in the class is your age, and boom! That's the guy I want? Really? Teenagers, who have never passed 45 will probably think it's a cute movie, and I guess that's what counts. Right?

Delightful!
What a truly delightful, feel-good movie this is! Some excellent acting from a cast who obviously enjoyed working together. This is the first time I've seen Gugu Mbatha-Raw acting - she really is excellent and is clearly going to go far. And I'm happy to reveal that she's just as nice in real life as she appears in this movie; as a youngster she would always smile and say hello on her way to school and Hollywood hasn't spoiled her in the slightest. I was chatting with her the other day about her forthcoming movie "Belle", a period drama in which she has the leading part. It starts filming this month and I'm sure I won't be the only one who will be greatly looking forward to seeing it.

Light as a feather
A very light, sweet rom com, starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. A teacher-pupil tale which is enjoyable for a night in.

Homely feel-good movie for the over 40s
Can't stop watching this. I think, since I bought it, I've watched it about five times. And it gets better every time. A nice, feel-good movie with some good solid characters played by expert actors. The world would be a better place if we had more of these stories around rather than 'shoot-em-up' type things that seems to be the norm nowadays.
