much to learn about modern technology
This third edition is excellent for high school and university libraries. Aimed at readers with a good prior background in computers. But you do not need a degree in computer science or engineering. The articles span many topics. From the Internet to mobile phones to email and much extra. Imagine perhaps that you have never used email. The text explains how it was the first killer app of the Internet. While for the Internet itself, you learn how it breaks a message into packets that can traverse different paths to the same destination, where the packets are reassembled in correct order. Somehow it all usually works! Gives you an appreciation for one of the key technologies of modern society. And there is an explanation of the computer. How it follows a basic architecture unchanged for decades. Designed by John von Neumann at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project.Much to learn! The only awkward point is the cost of the new books. Try the marketplace for used copies. Not cheap, but still much cheaper than the new ones.
