Q: Is the utp cat5 signal compatable with ethernet?

No. Ethernet is digital. These are analog. This signal will not travel through an ethernet switch. You use this device so you can combine both power and video onto one inexpensive Cat5/6 cable instead of running a much more expensive and bulky coax cable and separate power cable. Baluns are typically used in pairs. A camera is connected to the BNC and power connector, one end of a Cat5/6 cable is connected to this RJ45, the other end connected to the RJ45 of second balun and the BNC of the second balun connected to a DVR or video display. The video signal from the camera is moved from the BNC to one of the pairs of wires in the Cat5/6. The power connector of the second balun is connected to a power supply which then powers the camera through the other wires in the RJ45. A balun (BALanced to UNbalanced hence balun) converts an analog video signal on a twisted pair of wires (balanced) to an analog video signal on coaxial cable (unbalanced). A small transformer is used to do this. The BNC is unbalanced, the single pair of wires in the RJ45 connector is balanced. It will work in either direction, balanced to unbalanced or vice versa. Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable has 4 pairs of wires and the video signal uses the pair connected to pins 7 and 8. The other 3 pairs are used for power. The same power supply is connected to each of these 3 pairs. This reduces voltage drop with longer cables.

Q: i have swann nvr cameras with cat 5 connectors and a swann dvr with bnc connectors. can i still get 5mp and 1080p using these adapter?

I used on an Annke DVR at around 170ft runs and had still 1080P res.

Q: What does flashing light on adapter mean ?

Mine do not flash they are solid green. You may have a connection problem.

Q: I have a revo dvr and I'm looking for a adaptor to use the four bnc ports on the back of their dvr's hooking up a revo camera. Is this it?

I think so, Not familiar with Revo. but this allows you to use a BNC camera over a cat5 cable as long as you have an adapter at each end. They are male and female paired.
