Emerson 1F83C-11NP Conventional (1H/1C) Non-Programmable Thermostat, White

Very accurate thermostat. You can adjust the room temperature reading. Very easy to read display, very large. It cycles the AC on and off accurately. Easy to install, if you have trouble installing there are plenty of YouTube videos showing the process, it's pretty easy. If something goes wrong in the future, I will update this review, but so far this unit is light-years better than my old Honeywell thermostat. Oh yeah, other reviewers were concerned by the brand name: White-Rodgers, White-Rodgers was purchased by Emerson in the 1970's, I'm not sure why the product listing shows the Emerson brand, but the product you will receive is White-Rodgers and it is the exact same product as shown in the listing, it's just a subsidiary of Emerson.

I'm buying two of these (split system) to replace a high dollar Ecobee that was installed when I replaced my entire HVAC system a couple of years ago. The Ecobee is attached to the internet and changes temperature settings as it sees fit to make some tree hugging designer happy... you can't figure out why you feel like you're burning up when you discover Big Brother via WIFI has altered your temp settings and is trying to run your life, again. This thermostat (the Emerson) is heat and cool, off or on, fan auto or on and not programable. YOU decide what your thermostat should be set at without reporting to some WIFI connected AI monitor outside your house that continues to try to run your life. The guys are coming to install it Monday, so I'll add to this review after then. Post install: The Emerson thermostats are installed and are up and running perfectly, so now I am disconnected from the net and back in control of my private climate environment and not suffering the dictates of some Orwellian "Big Brother" wannabe.

After having my old Trane thermostat for over 15 years, the push buttons on it became hard to respond when changing the temperature, I decided to replace it with Emerson 80 series thermostat. It took me less than 5 minutes to do it, shut off the main electric source to the thermostat from the electric panel, and there were only 4 wires to connect Y,W,G,R. The thermostat comes with a little level in the panel to make sure it is leveled correctly. It works great! I did not even need to pay a handyman $99 to come and install it!

It was easy to install mainly because I was removing a thermostat and using this Emerson to replace it. So all the wires had been run and the system setup. It was very nice that the holes for the Emerson lined up with my previous thermostat so all I needed to do was to attach all the wires and screw it onto the wall. This thermostat had a place for my "C" wire which was tucked away because the old thermostat didn't have a connection for it. I set up the thermostat before I installed it right after I installed the battery. I had planned on having the display backlight on continuously so I activated that function in the setup. The thermostat will come on 1º below the set temperature and go off 1º above the set temperature. It's likely 0.75º because that's what I have the differential set in the tech programming area. I have multiple temperature sensors in the room. Of course they all read a little different. They read tenths of a degree. I ended up adjusting the thermostat 2º above what the original reading said to match my other temperature displays. It's more like 1.5º but it will only let me do whole degree number increases. My old thermostat would overshoot several degrees and it was very frustrating. This one shuts off as soon as it's 1º above the set temperature so the furnace isn't running as long and isn't over heating the room. The sensor is a bit slower to react than the last thermometer and all the others in the room. But they are all open to air sensors which react very quickly to any change. The only small complaint I have is the backlight isn't as bright as I'd like it to be. This is only based on 1 day of operation. If things change I'll edit the review.

We just had 2 installed in our home, one for a gas HVAC unit and one for an electric HVAC unit. We replaced two existing thermostats, one old and one new, because they were so darned hard to read! Too dark, especially at night. Had to keep flashlights handy just to read the screens, which were both way too small. These Emersons have large screens that light up briefly when you adjust the temp, but you can also light them up (briefly) via a button at the very top of the unit. You can also keep them lit if you have a certain wire configuration, which I'm not sure we have, but it is an option on the installer menu (need to read the user guide to learn how to access that menu; it's pretty simple). I don't think we would want them lit all the time since the screens are so big and the backlight is so bright. We had a plumber who was onsite to change a faucet install both thermostats. I watched him do it and am glad I didn't try it myself. It took him less than 15 minutes to do each one. I did point out to him, as I was reading the user guide to myself while he installed, that there was a separate setting for gas or electric. Since we had one of each, he made sure he set it correctly, so I'm glad I looked at the instructions. It has occurred to us that, with these new thermostats, we are having to adjust the temp less often. Seems like we were always getting up from whatever we were doing and adjusting the heat or air up or down. It was a way of life, so now that we don't have to do that, we realize the thermostat is regulating the temp and not just a mechanism to turn it on and off. Duh! I would recommend this thermostat if you want a very basic, adjust up or down, select heat or air, be able to read the screen in any type of light unit. No wi-fi or app or voice guide or remote access, just basic manual control.

Thermostat is simple to use and on/off temperature points are consistently precise. It has been connected to a gas heater. There has been no instances of relay chatter while cycling. Deg C has been used and slow cycling gave a temperature variance of approximately 1.4 deg C while medium cycling variation was around 0.8deg C. A "C" wire has been connected and the backlight remains on at all times. The backlight is not blue as shown, but a white/grey colour. The room temperature display is easy to read at night with no other room lighting. During the heating cycle the display shows "heat on" when the thermostat relay switches to call for heat. However, the "heat on" display lettering is relatively small and not easy to see. Its physical size is noticeably large. In summary, its simple, stable and functional with room temp easy to read. Delivered by Amazon (US) to Australia and arrived only one day late.

For a person who has never install/replace a thermostat before, I finished replacing my old thermostat with this Emerson thermostat within 10 minutes. It's up and running right after. I can't be more happy. It's been over a month already. The thermostat works well. It's just a thermostat, but compares to the old one, it really makes my home looking more modern and put together. The reading is huge. My mom is so happy that she no longer needs to lean so close to the wall to see what the temperature is. For myself, I love how all the buttons on the thermostat are silent. No more click-click sound when I adjust the temperature. It doesn't mean much to most people, but for me, it's a plus. I highly recommend this Emerson thermostat to anyone who is looking for a simple yet good looking thermostat to replace the old-fashion one.
