Hi Yes there is a little black tube so that the string can rest on the bridge without wearing the bridge down.

Q: What is the average lifespan? If it starts sounding "tinny" or rings while playing other strings, is it time for a new string?

Depends on how much you play. From my experience, if you play 2 hours everyday, it will probably last 3 months.
