They are the color codes for each of the wires that attach there. E? (I didn't use that one), AUX-white, Y-yellow, G-green, O-orange, L? (didn't use that one either), R-red, B-(didn't use it but I think it's for black), C-cyan (blue). I hope that help. Mary

Honeywell TH3210D1004 does NOT have “emergency” mode. Honeywell RTH3100C1002 does have “emergency” mode. Both of them operate with 2 stage heating. That means you can have a Heat Pump with Auxiliary Heat. For example the Aux Heat can be an electrical strips. If something happens with the outside unit and it is unable to operate for some reason, you can put the thermostat on “Emergency”. The electrical strips will start running, it will be expensive heating, but you will stay warm. You should call a HVAC tech. The second stage of heating might be a gas furnace, but I am not sure. We never use that configuration in my country. It just furnace or just Heat Pump with strips

Does it need the coverplate #50002883001?

No, the back of the tstat comes off to mount to the wall and connect the wires to. The front mounts to the wall plate and you are done. Just follow the instructions.

Does it work for gas and electric heat?

Yeah it will just make sure the switch on the back is in the correct position to run gas or electric heat and the setup program on the thermostat is set correctly also.
