Am I to understand it's $7.47 for ONE?! They were 25¢ when I was a kid.

Yup, when I bought it, I got just one. Don't remember exactly what I paid, but $7 sounds about right. But 25 cents when I was a kid probably meant as much to me as $7.47 does now. These prices can change day to day though. They're not producing them in the quantities that they did, of course - but then again, the 25 cent one wasn't made in China either.

How can some reviews say it's just like the original ball of the 70's and others say it's a piece of junk. So what is it.

Only "baby boomers" who played with a Spalding ball back in the 50's and 60's know and will tell you that the current ball that is sold now is without a doubt a piece of junk. If you never played a street game with an original Spalding ball, we forgive you for not knowing the difference. The original ball was bigger (like a tennis ball) and harder. You could hardly find or see the seam. The pink color was lighter. It bounced much higher than the current ball. And when you hit it just right with a stickball bat, that ball went into the stratosphere. You could buy a cheap ball to play with that costs 10 or 15 cents. But for 25 cents, you got a Spalding high-bounce ball that was well worth the extra money.

How are the product dimensions of a "ball" 3 x 3 x 2 inches? Does this mean they are persistently depressed?

Nope. Just means the ball has a diameter of 3 inches. If you squeeze it, it depresses perhaps another inch in.The rubber is a very thin material, not designed for longevity. The originals in the 1950's were very thick rubber.
