Go with the name brand. Save the headache.

I have had this filter on subscription for 2+ years and will continue to use them until my turtles water filter quits working.

I use the U4 along with Fluval's hangon tank filter in a 55g for water turtles. They together keep the tank ok and cheaper right now than the FX I want. But this is short term solution and they filters are at opposite ends of tank to push together dirty water. SO while this works, I wouldn't recommend others do it if they can afford the FX series for water turtles. This is best for fish, and haven't had any problems with my feeder fish getting into this filter. *Change out only one side(there are 2) at a time to keep the good biological bacteria.

These were pretty durable. They dont stay clean long tho if you have turtles.

I'm using this product for myself in the shower. I found it will remove the epidermis cells with ease. Cleaning up the product is a jif. I believe based on these facts for me, probably then, it would also make a good product for cleansing the tank.
