The Expansion Dock provides an easy way to power the Omega with any Micro USB cable and breaks out the Omega’s GPIO pins. You can use them to control external circuits or connect Expansion boards to extend the functionality of your Omega. It also comes with an on-board USB-to-serial chip that allows you to access the terminal directly from your computer. You can provide power to the Omega and Dock with any Micro USB cable. The Dock includes a regulator circuit that ensures the Omega always receives the stable 3.3V it needs to operate optimally. Thanks to the on-board USB-to-Serial chip, you will always have access to the Omega’s serial terminal. No network connectivity required, just a solid USB connection. The serial terminal is especially handy when accessing the bootloader to re-flash your Omega. Review: Thank you! A must for setting up Onion Omega2+ IOT device It was easy to use, just plug and play. It has facility to add SD card to extend file system, which I have done.

The board works right out of the box. Simply insert the Onion Omega board and connect it to a power source via USB and you are ready to go. Communication with the Omega works headless, i.e. you connect via WiFi. The Omega chip is independent of the board for communication or programming. However, the board is very convenient and safe for powering the chip and easy GPIO access.
