Vicious/Vengeful slipcase: V.E. Schwab

Nice easy reading book. I enjoyed it.

I love most anything that V.E. Schwab writes and this is no exception. This story is kind of like a morally gray super hero origin story. You want to root for these characters but, they are not the most well rounded individuals. If you like syfy, superhero’s, suspense, and don’t mind a little bit of gruesomeness, this series is for yo.

** spoiler alert ** I needed a bit of time to process everything that happened in this book, but I'm ready to write a review now! Firstly, I have to say that fantasy books have been hit or miss with me. Last year was a disaster and I was convinced that I didn't like fantasy anymore! But boy oh boy was I wrong!! I had heard about this book a while ago but never picked up, however, it came up on my TikTok fyp and I was hyped (yes, I get influenced by TikTok, some recommendations are really good). Let's start by talking about the characters: I love them. The dynamic between Eli and Victor is so interesting, I definitely think they're boyfriends because there is too much tension and allusions for them to be straight. Sidney is lovely and I really liked her storyline. Mitch is AWESOME, love him. I cried every time he got shot and was heartbroken when I thought he was dead. The storyline is very interesting. I was fascinated by the EOs and how their thoughts when they were dying, linked to their powers. It made me think about what I would think, and I have no clue so... cheers to that! Haven't read Vengeful yet, so I'll probably edit this review later!

Ma chi è davvero cattivo? Questo sequel è una degna continuazione del primo libro dove ritroviamo la bella scrittura, l’azione, i capitoli brevi e i piani temporali ben gestiti. Un fantasy dove non contano tanto i poteri quanto “l’umanità” delle persone. I personaggi sono grigi, né buoni fino in fondo ma nemmeno malvagi per il puro gusto di esserlo. Al primo libro ho dato 9/10 e questo è un 8/10. Un punto in meno perché i troppi personaggi a volte scemano e perché qui c’erano fin troppe pagine. Ma non posso fare altro che consigliarvi questa serie! 🇬🇧 After the events of “Vicious”, EOs can be everywhere. Each of them has a different power and they can be a potential problem. But are they all evil? This book is a good sequel where we have the same good elements of the first book: beautiful writing, action, short chapters, a good and solid idea. This is a fantasy series where the superpowers aren’t as important as the people who have them. The characters are morally grey, they’re not always good people but they’re not evil for the sake of doing harm to others either. “Vicious” was a 9/10 and I’m gonna rate “Vengeful” 8/10 because I there were way too many characters and pages. But I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the series! I highly recommend it!

Vicious grabbed me from the first page and spat me out, broken and twitching, on the last. It felt like a roller coaster without a safety bar. It's clever writing had me flying through the pages, and the characters, while not all entirely likeable, were still fantastic, layered characters that kept the book going. The two main characters are so morally gray, they suck the color from everything around them. It is a story that focuses on their revenge, but over time, the reader wonders who to side with. Sometimes, I sided with both. Sometimes, I sided with neither. Sometimes, I sided with Mitch, who wasn't even involved in the central conflict, lol That said, Vicious has the most conflicted protagonists I have read in a long time. I love that the author does not push a character's goodness (or evil) onto the reader. Both Victor and Eli have their own reasons for doing what they do, and it's up to the reader to decide what to make of it. It felt real, refreshing, and human, despite being a book about potential superpowers. I suppose what made the book so real to me was how, despite their monstrous deeds, Victor and Eli were understandable. Understandable in a way that maybe, if I were pushed by their circumstances, I wouldn't act too differently. They were monsters, but in a way I could imagine myself becoming in their shoes. Isn't that terrifying? I would absolutely recommend this book, but it does have dark themes (CW: self-harm, death). It flew by for me, especially because of its bite-sized chapters, and stayed with me long after.
