good deal for the price
I bought these to finish covering the floor of my photo studio (approximately 17' x 10', and I've filled in gaps with some custom woodcuts). I use these and a different pair of tatami mats I had previously purchased at an organic shop for more than 2x the price. The more expensive tatami is definitely nicer to lay on: it has more of a perceivable "give" and also feels like more homogeneous of a material. On these tatami the most prominent observation is an underlayment that sounds like plastic sheeting between the grass and the straw layer (probably as a moisture barrier). Secondarily, it seems that the core material is not as even. But given that the price includes delivery, if you're not extremely sensitive to the function and only are using these for aesthetics as I am, I would say they're quite worth it and I'm happy to have this as an option.

What other options at this price and delivery?
So, I’m not a connoisseur of tatami. Yes it’s made in China. But I’m thinking even some tatami in Japan is made in China. These are heavy. My delivery UPS lady can lift all sorts of things. She’s great. This is robustly heavy. It feels like a floor. I have dogs. They get on this. They’re good learners. They initially wanted to dig, but I said no and they listen. Now they chill on the tatami. Maybe one or two broken straws now. I consider this worked in tatami. The support I use is an old futon frame. Added in the border. I love it. Going to rig a half on half off floating round table for larger gatherings, using stools for those not on the tatami. Yes, I sleep on it some nights. I like this better than the bed. How far down does the grass go? I don’t know. It’s not fully grass. Update: Feels lumpy. It’s not the grass that’s lumpy. It’s whatever the underlayment is…

Tatami + 1.5 inch Foam Topper: Back Pain is Gone!!
I have been sleeping on a futon placed on top of a plywood board for the past two years after having tried all sort of firm mattress. Back pain has been torturing me on and off since then. I spent hours and hours on the Internet to search for all sort of options and finally I found the solution that worked out for me. I purchased two tatami mats for the queen size bed and placed on top of them a 1.5 inch foam topper from Terapedic. Last night I finally got a good night of sleep and woke up without back pain after a 7-night stretch of acute back pain that required medical treatment, forced me in bed for two consecutive days and made my life miserable! One warning: do not try to sleep on this tatami without at least a 1.5 inch topper on top of it; it's like sleeping on a paved floor! This tatami is MUCH harder than the traditional Japanese mat. I sincerely hope that this solution will help someone else with back pain problems. Only who suffers from it can understand how debilitating this problem is.

Not for me
I ordered this based on the positive reviews but it just wasn't for me. I'm accustomed to a very plush pillow-top mattress so when I slept on a thin futon-roll on top of this (after a move, where I couldn't take my previous bed/mattress), it was just too much of an adjustment. I tried it for 3 weeks but never managed to adjust. It would probably work for you if you like a really firm mattress or like sleeping on the floor. As for the smell, it didn't bother me at all. I actually kind of liked it. Very earthy. It dissipated after just a few days though.

Look at the measurements
I ordered the California king size, what showed up was not a California king.... However the measurements on the site are indeed what showed up.... They call it one thing but it is NOT a California king. If you had two of them it would be close. One of them is not at all the size of a full on California king. Our idea was to use this as a larger "mat" under our queen size memory foam mattress on the floor. Reality is however, what showed up would not even fill half of the mattress wide, but would be much longer then it. For the price it is outrageous for what arrives. It did arrive expeditiously and it was in good shape, so I can't complain about anything other than the very misleading name. In short pay attention to the measurements, something I usually do but in this case was hoodwinked because I did not.

Unexpectedly wonderful results
Definitely the right move to make! I wanted to get rid of my ginormous bed and save some space in my room, and after only the first night sleeping on the mat, I felt somehow stronger, like the mat had given me some kind of power overnight; a power like this shouldn't belong to everyone, so be careful who else you let sleep on it. The "queen size" is actually a standard twin size, so when I find someone I'd like to share this unlimited strength and near invincibility with, I'll have to purchase another because the mat is really only suitable for one body. At this point (about 3 nights in with the mat) the comfort level is amazing (doubled with the futon D&D Futon Furniture Queen Size Cotton / Polyester Traditional Japanese Floor Futon Mattresses, Black ), and along with my newfound strength and near invincibility power, my back feels better aligned. I spend my days sitting at a computer for work, and since I started sleeping on the mat, I've noticed a significant difference in my sitting posture and how much better I feel even after hours in the same position. If you're looking for something different and minimal, with the added bonus of, I daresay, superpowers, then this mat is for you.

Cheap Construction
The sides have a cardboard cover that easily gets messed up if youre not careful handling the mats. In the picture, you'll see two shades of black, the top part is fabric while the bottom is a cardboard cover that wraps around the sides of the mat. It got damaged over the two weeks of having it. I really needed these two mats and I thought that at $300 each, there would be a higher quality in their construction. The mats are comfortable and work well with my futon, but other than that, i'm very disappointed with the product quality and would not encourage anyone buy them at this price point.

great quality
ok - we hated our bed. had a mattress and a box spring hated it. My boyfriend has a herniated disk in his lower spine and read that Japanese mattress are the best for body support. he bought one of these in a twin size and was sleeping on the floor for years - well I wanted him back in the bed so I shoved out about $1000 for this whole set: Platform bed: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015VG0R0/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00 GREAT quality, NOT particle board real wood real quality. 2: Tatami mats: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WK745M/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00 these were to most expensive part and they are truly heavy and made of great quality materials. 2: 3 inch thick Japanese pads http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009EEMH3Q/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 We wanted extra soft but support so two was perfect. Comforter set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J3ODVK/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00 soooo warm, soft, pretty and great quality. we also have a 4 inch thick memory foam pad under the pads - we just had it around and figured we would use it. This whole set is amazing. AND the mattresses work great with regular queen size sheets. It looks like a real bed but so much better. We even take our mattress pad with us when we sleep over other places. ALSO: GREAT NOTE the bed is extremely quiet and sturdy. when someone rolls over gets up or jumps on it you can't hear anything or feel anything! its...again...amazing!
