Q: How is the game played? is it same difficulty level as hoot owl hoot?

This is a wonderful game, easy to play, but not so easy as to be boring. No two times played is the same, always a new twist. My grandkids ages 6 and 8 love it. I don't know about hoot owl hoot, but this game is not difficult, yet it's very engaging. You pick veggies to put into the soup, and try not to get a 'put out the fire' card. The object is to get all veggies into the soup before the fire goes out. It takes a few 'put out the fire" cards to put it out! Then, there's the stone...only the stone can save you if you have the last 'put out the fire card' - - it keeps the fire from going out! All of us, young and old, like this game!

Q: Is the "story" the stone soup story book or just a pamphlet? thx

No it is just a game but it is super fun my preschoolers loved it. I bought my copy of stone soup on Amazon though and it's the one with a gray cover and orange.

Q: I have an almost 9 year old and 12 year old. They still enjoy playing memory but is this too young for them?

It might be too young for them. There are fewer cards than regular memory, it is a cooperative game, and it is pretty difficult to lose. My son enjoyed it at 5-6, but is not as interested at 7. That being said, it would be a great game for someone that age to play with a younger sibling/cousin/friend.
