Michigan Maple Block Co 20 x 15 x 1-3/4" Maple Cutting Board

I've never bought an all maple cutting board or an expensive one, so I usually end up with Acacia wood or something that's less expensive. One thing I wanted though was that nice solid sound when the knife hits the cutting board. With the ones I've had it's this shallow, annoying sound. I wanted to get a John Boos one, but then I saw this one which was less money and it had good reviews. I live in Michigan, so being that it's a company in Michigan I decided to get it. First the good: I liked that it was heavy, so it does not move around on the counter. It has that great solid sound I was looking for when the knife hits it. The Not So Good: I wished the handle grooves on the side were deeper. They are very shallow and still kind of hard to grab. But the biggest thing that was a negative is that it is very rough. I was going to return it based on that but decided to sand it to see if that would help. I had to use a 150 grit to get any results. I must have sanded for an hour and just did both top surfaces as I didn't care about the sides being rough. I got it pretty smooth and decided to keep it. I'm giving it 4 stars because I don't think the customer should have to do that when they get it. There is no reason this board can't be completely smooth from where they make it. I've just started using it so I hope it's going to last a number of years. I put the cutting board oil on it and will try and do that once a month. Also the NSF sticker on it is lop-sided. Why couldn't they put it on straight? It just makes it sloppy looking. I have that side against the wall though. I know I'm being picky but for a very simple cutting board with a very simple design, this should have been perfect, especially for the money.

Nice cutting block! I purchased this because it was the correct length and width to fit over the left side of my sink. I use several layers of conditioner on it about once a month and have only had to sand it once in the past 9 months. The block did show knife marks right away but I keep my knives sharp and I have never had any cutting board or block that didn't show knife marks so not a big deal to me. This block gets heavy daily use and has weathered beautifully. At this time, I haven't had any splitting. I have been careful not to immerse in water.

My 5 stars are for both the seller "Dawn's Depot" and the item. I ordered this board in October 2014 and have used it almost daily with much satisfaction. A short time ago I noticed small cracks appearing between the glued sections and contacted Dawn's Depot to complain. Much to my delight, Dawn replaced the cutting board immediately at no cost to me. The new board just arrived and I haven't used it yet but it looks great and I am thoroughly impressed by the courtesy and speed with which Dawn addressed my concerns. If you have any hesitations about the quality of this product, take heart that the seller stands by the product so much so that she did not hesitate to replace it when it appeared I got a dud. I'm hoping to edit this post in the future to say how the new board is doing.

Absolutely love my block. I haven't used it much for chopping yet, mostly just kneading dough but that's what I bought it for. Lovely block, very durable and smooth.

Fantastic cutting board. It is large enough to accommodate all your chopping needs and preserves your quality knives. Be aware that it is heavy but this is not a deterrent: it's a solid piece of maple. It requires maintenance and you have to be willing to care for it. For the first month I oiled it daily, followed by once a week, and now monthly for long term maintenance. I am very satisfied.

Pieces are starting to come unglued after about 6 months of use. I keep this oiled, dry, and use maybe once a day. On the edge, two of the boards in the middle of the block are starting to separate from each other.

Definitely a good looking cutting board with solid construction. The board does come finished (oiled, I believe), which is different than what other reviews indicated. I can't review the durability as a cutting board because I am not using this product as a cutting board. It is part of my printer stand... and it looks fantastic!!!
