Just What I Needed
Strongly recommend some practice sessions before you get to work. The product worked for me, just needed to be aware of a few settings to get everything right. Great tool for a good price...FWIW, I'm running Windows 11 and had no issues loading or getting this software to run.

It worked! Got my tapes to digital
Worked every time. I was able to get my mini DV tapes to digital on my PC. Well worth the price for priceless moments I captured over 20 years ago.

Mac Users Are Better Off Getting the Elgato Video Capture
Bought this when I couldn't find my decade old Elgato Video Capture device that functions much the same. This is waaaay cheaper than the Elgato (which is usually around $90) but I figured technology has changed so much it's probably just cheaper to make the same device now for use with open source software. Well... turns out the majority of the price for the Elgato version is for access to their very simple but trusty plug-and-play software that only works with their own devices. Using this device with the recommended OBS software works fine for purely raw video capture but if you're on a Mac 1) you need to also download additional 3rd party software to be able to capture sound and set up a multi-output aggregate device in your sound settings (not a huge deal, I've done that before for screen recording) 2) I'm not entirely sure it can capture sound that's ONLY associated with the video you're capturing. It says it can but it definitely wasn't happening when using this converter no matter how much I played with the settings.Although, I'll admit I was more distracted by the bigger issue: even when I muted all other sounds, did every combination of audio sources and settings, and changed all the connections I could- the converter device itself was creating an awful droning static buzz I was hearing through OBS that drowned out all other audio whenever I played video through it. So odds are my audio issues are due to faulty or damaged pieces internally on the converter and it's probably not universal to all. But I lost a few hours troubleshooting and realized it wasn't worth all the extra hassle.Eventually I found my decade old Elgato device and used their software to get clean audio along with the same quality visual (as well as make videos that retained the native 4:3 ratio of the footage automatically without additional editing). So much easier.

SKEPTIC TO HAPPY BUYER
I previously gave this a rating of 1 and called this junk. My view has changed.Prior failed attempts.Previously purchased the same product with a different name REDGO. Installation instructions that came with the device led to repeated error message when I launch the software program.“ selected device cannot be used. Select another device.” I also never heard that unique sound when you insert a USB device into a laptop. “Updated driver” link the seller sent resulted in same error message. Sent the device back about a month ago. I’m still waiting for my refund. This device (Video DVR) is the exact same product REDGO from the same company. I got the same error message after installation. Tried all the recommendations from the reviews; 1. Disabled my webcam; 2. I downloaded “updated software” from VIDBOX (vidbox is the new name for the original company Honestech.) 3. I downloaded OBS (open source video program). GOT THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE.WHAT WORKED WITH THIS DEVICE (Video DVR)?1. Sent email to seller to provide specific set up instructions. These are the instructions the seller sent below numbered A through E under this section:A) Firstly, connect the adapter to the computer- Windows installed some drivers automatically and thenB) - install the software that comes with it. (CD)C) - connect device to the VCR and then opened the installed program on the computerD- opened settings (options)- selected the input video (VHS VCR USB) (In my case AV to USB 2.0)- selected the input sound (same as the above) (In my case AV to USB 2.0)- selected the destination folder on my computer- selected ntsc high definition formatE) - pressed the big red record button and pressed play on the VCR. (Or camcorder)2. I uninstalled the entire VHS/VCR program from my laptop4. Enabled my webcam5. Made sure all laptop/windows updates were current. (I have windows 10)6. With wifi connected to my laptop, I then followed the instructions from the seller. For the first time I heard that unique sound when a USB device is inserted into a laptop.7. But i still got the error message when I reached seller step D : “selected device cannot be used. Select another device.”A laptop check indicated the device was working properly and all drivers for the device were up to date.IMPORTANT FINAL CHANGE THAT WORKED.8. I created a “guest user” account on my laptop and gave the account administrator role as well.9. I accessed my laptop via the guest account.10. Followed steps A, C, D and E from the seller. BINGO!!11. I have copied about 1 hour Hi8 tape from my camcorder and one VHS tape so far. Color quality is not too great. I’ll worry about that later.12. I have not used the edit and burn sections of the program yet, but I am confident it will work.UNANSWERED QUESTIONS1. Still don’t know why the device does not work when I use my regular user account on the same laptop.2. Don’t know if OBS played a role. I have not launched it yet but won’t uninstall it for now.3. Don’t know if the VIDBOX driver (Driver NW07) I installed played a role.Changing my review to 4 until I get my refund.

Poor capture of color when digitizing VHS
Pros - easy to use with Quicktime on my Macbook with great audioCons - Video quality was OK except for poor capture of colors. Most footage was closer to black and white than to color. I monitored on a TV so I could compare digitized file to VHS file. May be returning.
