Amazon delivery was extremely fast which allowed me to get into this game that much quicker. I purchased two decks based on video reviews as well as other Amazon reviews that outline the limitations of a single deck with the double sided cards. The app works flawlessly and is a nice addition. The game can be played without the app by printing the quests from the website. I would also recommend the updated rulebook from the website as the printed rulebook that is included is not as defined on some mechanics. For a person accustomed to these type of games the updated rules may not be needed due to experience from other games. What I found was I played as the printed noted and continued but thought it would make more sense if it work differently. I then read the updated rules after playing several games and they define more clearly and are more closely similar to other dungeon type games. Additionally, as a miniature gamer I was concerned on how I would like using meeples for the heroes and dice to represent the enemies. This actually works quite well as you damage on the enemies that have more than 1 hit point can be tracked by turning the die to the current level rather than tracking wounds separately. I initially played this straight out of the box as it was intended and found it enjoyable but like many other players noted the cards sliding causing tracking the hero treasure, life and energy more difficult. I easily fixed this by taping three card sleeves (per hero) together. Then with the openings at the bottom, slide the hero, equipment and ability cards into the sleeves with the treasure, health and energy behind. This aligned all the modifiers as well as allowing the treasure, health and energy cards to slide more smoothly and remain in place. I am only about 20 games in but I am enjoying this and can see this being something that I can travel with and still enjoy a dungeon adventure that includes actual grid movement and combat rolls that other card based games are lacking. Some improvements could be made. One would be the inclusion of random traps or finding treasures. These are currently included with traps being described in the quests but would be better if it was based on a roll as you enter a room. The other aspect would be the ability to generate maps randomly without the app or any other published quest to have a completely random adventure. Based on experience I have ideas to resolve both my concerns and any fantasy board gamer will enjoy game as it is. I highly recommend Deckbox Dungeon.

I purchased this game on a whim during the Prime Day sale of 2022. At the time is was $20 and figured what could I lose: I like dungeon crawlers, it is portable, and seems like it would be interesting. I saw it posted on the BGG forums and figured I would give it a whirl. GAMEPLAY The gameplay is quite simple: use your character to move through a randomly-generated dungeon, kill enemies, and defeat the boss. The game comes with a companion app for mobile or via Steam that randomizes the dungeons for you. It has a handful of scenarios that tell you what to set up and how to set up the enemy pieces. The rules are pretty simple, though check the developers site because they have received big updates than what comes in the box. Game play is simple. Pick 2 characters for solo play (for 3-4 players you need to add another box), line up their items and health, and off you go. You navigate through the dungeon, rolling dice to see if you hit and kill enemies while the AI does the same. Once you get to the end, there is a boss with special rules. PORTABILITY Everything fits in the box. All cards, meeples, and dice fit in the box so you could easily take it with you anywhere you go. If you don't have access to the app, you can print and play the scenarios from the developer's website. Since I sleeved my cards, I was unable to use the original tuckbox, but I replaced it with a 4x6 photo case that I use to house portable games. DIFFICULTY The game isn't hard per se, but it is challenging. You will definitely need to play a few games before locking down the rules, but that's not a bad thing. You will learn as you go that it is more of a challenge than difficult. VALUE Great value for the price. There is a lot of replayability in one box and numerous characters to choose from (8). DOWNSIDES There are no huge downsides to this game except the reliance on the app. However, like I mentioned before, you can print those scenarios and bring them with you. As for the gameplay, sometimes it can feel cramped playing on the standard-sized TCG cards, but that is the nature of the game. OVERALL I feel this is a great game to give as a gift or to buy for yourself if you are into dungeon crawlers. It doesn't take long to play and is easy to learn but hard to master.
