Engaging, Funny, Authentic
I love that the author writes in a very casual, down-to-earth, relatable way. You can tell that the recipes are authentic family recipes, and the anecdotes she uses illustrate that. I haven't tried the recipes yet; I just got interested in Puerto Rican food and tried to make a Pernil the past 2 Thanksgivings. They were okay- well the pork skin was phenomenal but the rest of the pork was just okay. I had made those pernils based on an internet recipe, so I thought I'd find a Puerto Rican cookbook that would have a better recipe for Pernil. This one definitely delivers. Although I haven't tried the pernil recipe yet, I definitely will and it looks a lot more authentic and precise than the other recipe I was using. The photos in this book are phenomenal and the colors and graphic design of the book are fantastic as well. Love it! If you're looking to try some traditional Puerto Rican recipes, this is for you!

More than just a cookbook
As a Puerto Rican that grew up in New England it has been a lifelong endeavor to stay close to my heritage - this is the cookbook I have been searching for my whole life. What Ilyanna has done here is truly remarkable. This book paints a picture of Puerto Rican cuisine not only through recipes and photos but through intimate stories and research that provides historical context for why these dishes are so important and should matter not only to Puerto Ricans but to the food world at large. This book is a joy to read from the colorful photos to the beautiful writing to the delicious recipes. don’t let my talk of her writing fool you - these recipes are amazing and everything I have made has turned out so delicious. This book is more than just a cookbook because it is a memoir, a reference book, and an art piece. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

More than a cookbook
Nice pictures of places in Puerto Rico that made me homesick accompanied with interesting stories about different towns where certain foods came from. As far as the recipes are concerned I found them easy and doable. However, I found that for a true island Puerto Rican, the amount of recipes of typical Puerto Rican dishes were limited.

Great gift (that keeps on giving)
I bought several of these books to give as gifts and was excited to find they were on discount at the time. I think it was buy three get one free or something like that when I bought them. This hardcover book is sturdy and would even look good on your living room table let alone your kitchen shelf. I follow this author on Instagram, subscribe to her newsletter, and I've bought her spice mixes. (I promise I'm not related to her,I just got lucky and found her on Instagram one day) @EatGordaEat is the BEST. She has almost no filter, she's hillarious, real AF, and her food is fudging fantastic. Do yourself a favor and buy this cookbook for yourself and get one for all those people in your framily who like to cook. Then they will make these recipes for you! That was my strategy and it's been working ;) See, it's the gift that keeps on giving!

More than a beautiful cookbook...
As much as I've enjoyed cooking and eating through the recipes in "Diasporican: A Puerto Rican Cookbook", I have to say I love reading everything in between. Ms. Maisonet's stories are touching, poignant, educational and hilarious. Her writing is intelligent and irreverent.Recipes from her childhood appear here and there between the recipes of Puerto Rico. You'll find the recipe for Mami's Sloppy Joe with Van Camp's pork and beans in the Beef chapter - along with Bistec Encebollado and Carne Guisada.Since this cookbook arrived, and I prepared the first recipe, sofrito will forever have a place in my kitchen. It is Everything!
