American mystery author Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) comes to Italy to promote his newest novel, TENEBRAE. Unfortunately, a razor-wielding serial killer is on the loose, taunting Neal and murdering those around him in gruesome fashion just like the character in his novel. As the mystery surrounding the killings spirals out of control, Neal investigates the crimes on his own, leading to a mind-bending, genre-twisting conclusion that will leave you breathless! Featuring an amazing synth-music score from Claudio Simonetti, Fabio Pignatelli and Massimo Morante (formerly of Italian progressive-rock band, Goblin), this all-new TENEBRAE release was created from the original uncut camera negative. Also stars John Saxon (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Daria Nicolodi (Dario Argento's PHENOMENA) and John Steiner (CALIGULA).Special Features: English and Italian language tracks with new removable subtitle tracks for bothInternational theatrical trailer Audio Commentary Track from film critic and Argento Scholar, Maitland McDonagh Review: If you enjoy Dario Agento movies, then u want this. - Hearing about Dario Agento movies. Must own Blu Ray release...
Dario Argento 's Tenebrae is a perfectly executed giallo. Its's packed full of style, wonderful camera movement, and an amazing score. A great whodunnit, that I remember being clueless as to who was committing the murders the first time I saw it. Tenebrae is the last in a run of four absolute classic Argento films. Starting with Deep Red (1975) , then Suspiria (1977), then Inferno (1980), and ending with Tenebrae (1982). A must see film if interested at all in giallos or Italian horror from the 80s. Synapse did an unbelievable job with this Blu Ray. The picture and audio quality are spot on perfect. I also enjoyed the full length documentary extra, Yellow Fever: The Rise and Fall of the Giallo.

Another entertaining giallo by the master himself
Another entertaining giallo by the master himself. Decidedly less style-obsessed and visually inventive as some of his best work, but makes up for it with a suitably tangled murder mystery and some great kill sequences. The movie gets off to a somewhat clumsy start (and again there is that stilted acting and awkward dialogue that is almost part of the appeal of these movies once you're endeared to them), but steadily improves as it progresses. The climax really elevates the rest of the film and ends things on a high note. I also enjoyed the somewhat meta quality of the film, as it's about a giallo writer who provides some well-placed wink-and-a-nod dialogue that comments on the movie itself. Not a masterpiece, but a fun film with an unpredictable plot and a number of memorable sequences that make up for its shortcomings. Decent 4/5

The best version so far of this classic giallo.
Up until recently, copies of Tenebrae had been pretty expensive to get ahold of, at least in North America, with copies of it often exceeding sixty dollars or more for the out of print Anchor Bay release. But finally, Synapse films saw fit to give this Argento classic the royal treatment it deserves. The film is often regarded as one of Dario Argento's best giallos, and it's reputation is well earned. The film is stylish, features fantastic cinematography, good looking locations, suitably graphic murder sequences that are filmed with his usual eye for beauty, and some solid nudity to back things up with. But besides the movie, my favorite part of Synapse's Blu-ray release of the film is the inclusion of a 90 minute documentary titled "Yellow Fever: The rise and fall of the Italian giallo."

Amazing movie. Amazing transfer.
This is an amazing movie. Anything Argento does makes me happy, but this movie has a certain feel to it. It's not supernatural like some of his other films and it really translates well to more audiences because of this. John Saxon is also amazing to see!! The blu ray of this movie is just gorgeous. The colors pop and the audio is really on point. The dog chasing scene scared my dog so that can only be good!

Worthy version of one of my favorite Argento films
I finally got to see all of the contents of the BD and it is amazing. The transfer is good and the extras are nice. Synapse did a fine job restoring it.

Tenebrae (aka Shadows,Unsane-1982.) Review of 2disc Arrow video bluray/DVD edition(2015).There are many reviews of this film,so I'll describe what is on the discs(with comparison to the popular Anchor Bay 2006 edition). The Bluray(1080p) & DVD have the same extras(most of which were originally available on Arrows 2011 release)-which are.... ...A15min feature where director Dario Argento talks mostly about his experiences with this film & how he feels he's viewed by "the media". His former partner & Tenebrae actress Daria Nicolodi has a 16min section, where as usual she is articulate & I found this the more interesting of the 2 features. These are both in Italian with English subtitles & feature scenes from relevant films, -as does the 10min feature with the easy going & likeable Claudio Simonetti , who talks about working on the soundtrack, film & censorship & also appears live with Goblin from 2011 for some enjoyable ,intimate concert footage, from Glasgow(16mins). There is a brief but good critical appraisal(12mins)of the film.+ the English language trailer. For many the commentaries are important & you're not let down here-Thomas Rostock(who provided a good one for Deep Red) supplies an in depth, very serious analysis of what he states is his favourite Argento film & it is full of fascinating observations & opinions. The commentary by Writers/critics/old friends Kim Newman & Alan Jones is considerably less studious but very entertaining, with some of their own equally worthwhile insights, together with some 'eye witness' accounts of events from the early '80s The option to watch with a commentary & with subtitles to the film ,or to switch between commentaries & the film is available on the Bluray Disc but not the DVD. The film is available in English or Italian languages (both with optional English subtitles) In 'mono 2.0' audio. The Anchor Bay edition has just English audio but this was in 'Dolby surround' & 'digital 5.1' The Image: condition, quality & clarity is outstanding & I think much improved compared to the Anchor Bay release(& other versions I've seen). The thought that went into the look of the film comes through in nearly every scene, with tones & shades of blues & red standing out from the almost pastel yellow & greens in a film that is nearly all set in a harsh ultra-modernistic looking Rome, and mostly filmed 'In the light'-Even during the night time scenes, there's 'nowhere to hide'. This is a very different but equally stylish look by Argento & tech crew as was achieved in 'Deep Red' or 'Suspiria'. As has been previously noted,Tenebrae is taken from Latin for 'shadows' or 'darkness'...... Both editions are in 1:85-1 ratio for 16:9 screen . Both versions are also 'uncut',around 97mins with Arrows having Italian credits(with the film being titled 'Tenebre'). ABs are in English. Strangely there is a difference in the editing of the scenes in the 'Hitchcock like' sequence involving John Saxons exit, but this doesn't adversely affect the film. But what else does the older Anchor Bay copy have that this version doesn't ?... ..A fair bit actually, in particular a(slightly stilted -having to speak in English) commentary from Dario Argento, with Claudio Simonetti .A 36min cableTV interview from the mid 80s with Argento & Nicolodi, another good (12min)analysis of the film, an 'alternative end credit' extra & a couple of short segments - one on sound fx, the other on the complicated technique & equipment used in a renowned scene where the camera tracks around, over & then into an apartment in a 'single take'. Arrow video have with their edition delivered in the range of extras & outstanding picture quality. As usual they also provide a reversible sleeve with a(typically gaudy but eye catching )new design & a 'classic' image -the original(unaltered version)of the 'poster advert' picture, used for the cover of Anchor Bays issue & a previous Arrow release). Also included is a very good 40pg booklet with some atmospheric images to go with an appreciation of the film & an interview with cinematographer Luciano Tovoli. So an excellent addition to their catalogue available at a good price. But I feel fans of this, arguably Argentos last 'complete success' as a film will need this 'upgrade' but may still hold on to an Anchor Bay copy ,& if you haven't seen this film & you might be unsure ,used copies of the older DVD edition are available at very good prices(less than £5 at time of review). Arrows 2011 'collectors version' with postcards, poster & choice of 4 different covers & slipcase is still available on Bluray & DVD . Any purchase of this film is a good choice in my view..
