A great jumping-off point to start your own research!
Fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Most of us Americans were taught in our history books that the Clovis people came across a land bridge from Russia to Alaska about 12,000 years ago and spread through the rest of North America, eventually giving rise to the Native American populations who greeted our European ancestors upon their arrival in 1492. But our books never mentioned an ancient Jewish settlement that lived in Arizona, reports of fair-skinned Peruvians with wheat-colored hair, and Minoan symbols found in the Midwest. We also somehow missed out on the discovery of giant skeletons in mounds throughout the country, symbols of 1st century fair-haired Libyans in Kentucky, and Atlantean structures in the ocean around the Bahamas. Explorer Frank Joseph, editor-in-chief of Ancient American magazine, has handpicked some of the most intriguing articles on these topics and more from the magazine’s twenty-three-year history and compiled them into one captivating volume. From start to finish, this book is laden with mind-blowing archaeological discoveries that give us true insight into our country’s ancient past. While the majority of the articles in this book were utterly fascinating, there were a few in the mix that I wasn’t too crazy about. My primary complaint overall was that some of the authors/archaeologists made pretty big leaps from the evidence they had to the conclusions they drew about it. I understand that these artifacts don’t come stamped with date and country of origin, so some amount of conjecture is to be expected, but some maybe tried too hard to make the evidence fit the theory rather than the other way around. That said, I was nonetheless enthralled by each new discovery, and I appreciated how most of the articles not only described them in depth but also attempted to corroborate their evidence and locate each item’s place in history by citing reports from and aspects in common with nearby tribes. Many of the authors also took their research a step further by comparing their artifacts to other similar finds and known cultures in distant lands, often on the other side of the world. It is probably obvious at this point, but I would definitely recommend this book. It has given me a jumping off point to begin exploring some of these finds and their implications for myself. Great theories...little evidence
OK, I admit I am really into this type of ancient historical hypothesis. I love seeing real evidence that challenges mainstream science. I am someone that is willing to believe in different historical data than we are used too. heck, for that matter I will be willing to believe in Bigfoot, aliens or the Loch Ness monster -- but I need some proof, not just stories or legends.Alot of interesting theories are presented in this book. While some follow-up the theory with evidence (such as DNA tests, photos, etc), many just don't do anything to prove the case other than speculation and stories handed down. In fact some of the presented material has nothing to show other than speculation based on what someone said was told to them. And even then it is often based on something that was said or found by someone long dead and unable to verify.I would have preferred that the presented material be broken down by region (it jumped from North America to South America and all around throughout the book) then show the reader the hard facts, DNA tests and photos. Then if you want use conjecture and legend to help back-up your actual proof. Also there are some editing issues with the Kindle edition that made reading some passages difficult.Overall an interesting read, but some boring information with little proof thrown in which dragged down the factual parts.

Ancient America
I found it to be an interesting read. Although I had seen some of the stories in it on the History Channel or Travel Channel. However the book told more detail about some of the places than the actual TV show did. I had guessed that the shows were "doctored" for the sake of audience interest. At any rate, I found the stories of our ancient history to be quite interesting and far from what I had learned in school about our founding history and the people that really were here before Columbus.

I want to believe...
Proof. There is a lack of verifiable proof for the common, interested reader. We have all heard about the mounds in the mid west. Any photos of the digs? Photos of artifacts?“It has been said” and “many believe “ are not the proofs that I want to see.How many times have we read about Kennewick Man? Any day now we will see DNA evidence. Oh Kay.Author could kick this up to the next level. Organize research teams-I’d go! Unlock doors of thought and research for all of us. There is SERIOUS evidence available, make it available to the rest of us.Other than my selfish rant of frustration, the book is not bad. Read it and be the judge.

Some surprises.
Fascinating. Definitely makes you want to look into the research that has been done on these tidbits. An enticing collection of anomalies in archeology. Not quite as detailed as I was hoping for with some material, but I don't regret buying it. If you are wanting detailed research, look into more specialized authors. Joseph is addressing these mysterious stories in a general way to shake us up a little and start looking beyond our old assumptions of history. Always a good thing.

Opens your eyes to what has been hidden from us.
This book does not go very deep into most of these ancient places in America - it is up to you do further research. What Frank Joseph does is introduce these mostly unknown places to you in 2-5 pages, then leaves it up to you to make your own determination. I am quite interested in these ancient unknown places, and this book indeed does introduce you to many places that you probably did not know about. I have read other books from Frank Joseph, and pretty much anything published by him is pretty solid.

Just finished reading this wonderful book!
As children the history we were taught was totally wrong. This book has been fascinating; and, I cannot wait to read the final story. I pray I get to read it in my lifetime! Thank you!
