Beautiful reproductions of the art selected to illustrate the artists. The authors did an excellent job of selecting the most important artists in the history of Western art. I only had a minor quibble or two with their choices. The articles on each artist were concise and informative. This is an excellent book for anyone who needs a good introduction to art.

This book and it's subject was just about what I was looking for. I was interested in a brief intro to known works of art and this book suited the purpose. The reproduced pictures were of a high quality which was a very big plus.

The book had quite a few Artist I did not know from the years 1200-1900. Some who died at a very early age. i wish the book had some artist from the twentieth century. Maybe that will be in version II. :-) I do recommend this book for an instructor, student, and enthusiast.

As the title suggests, this book is a very brief introduction to 50 various painters from before the Renaissance to modern day painters. On average, the author devotes 2-3 pages to every artist. The writing is clear and very enjoyable. So if you're looking for a short and fun book to read in order to obtain basic knowledge of the world's most exciting painters, this book will be just great for you.

This book will be good for people who are fairly new to art, and can enjoy the wonderful quality of the reproductions and commentary with each one. But I found it covered the same set of artists and paintings that are generally reviewed in this type of book - and didn't find much new material. The author's weren't intending to cover new ground, but to introduce good paintings to those who hadn't see them. If you've read up on Art History, if you've read books on art like Sister Wendy's, you might want to pass on this book.

My mom, who is an artist, absolutely loved this book!It's summary of each artist is short and informative. A greatbook for ANYONE to brush up on famous artists.Going to a museum anytime soon...read this first!
